Aviators name Cody Murphy as Head Coach

May 6, 2024

The Elmira Aviators, proud members of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), are excited to announce and welcome the 2024-2025 Head Coach.

The Aviators have named Cody Murphy as the first Head Coach in franchise history. Cody brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Elmira both as a former player and coach.

Cody played junior hockey in the USHL for 3 seasons (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Tri-City Storm) prior to playing Division I at Miami University from 2011-2015. During his time at Miami, he finished his senior year with a NCHC playoff championship. After his collegiate career, Cody played professional hockey which included NHL rookie camps with the Washington Capitals and 4 seasons in HockeyAllsvenskan in Sweden from 2015-2019.

After he retired from playing Cody began his coaching career where he crossed paths with current Aviator’s President of Operations Ray Welsh serving as his junior hockey head coach with the Elmira Jr. Enforcers (now Impact) and the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Knights. Cody led both first year organizations to nationals having a combined overall record of 77-22-3. Cody currently serves as a hockey director for a travel/youth club in Chicago overseeing an organization of 150 players while coaching multiple teams.

Cody is excited to return to Elmira and to begin the Aviators 2024-25 inaugural season. “My family and I are extremely excited to accept this opportunity and to work alongside a dedicated staff,” Head Coach Cody Murphy said. “We have experience building first year organizations and I’m looking forward to leaving our mark. I have had my former team play out of First Arena, and I understand it is a privilege to play there. The environment at First Arena is as electric as I've ever seen and I know our players will be fired up to be there. I thank Ray Welsh and his staff for their support. Go Aviators!"
