Maine defenseman Steele makes NCAA DI Commitment

March 6, 2024

The Maine Nordiques of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are proud to announce that defenseman John Paul “JP” Steele has announced he has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for the University of Alaska-Anchorage.

Steele, 20, is playing in his 3rd and final season in the NAHL. His career kickstarted with the Lone Star Brahmas in the 2021-22 campaign where he appeared in 5 games. Last season was his first full season in the league and first with the Nordiques. The Franklin, Michigan native recorded 4 goals and 17 assists in 54 games, also appearing in 7 Robertson Cup playoff games.

“I’m proud to announce my commitment to play Division 1 hockey at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Thank you to God, my family, friends, coaches, and everyone who has supported me along the way,” said Steele.

This season, Steele has been consistent on both ends of the ice. Through 46 regular-season games, JP has produced 17 points (4 goals, 13 assists). He also sits second on the Nordiques roster with a 32 +/- rating. JP was recently selected to participate in the 2024 Top Prospects Tournament, representing Team East.

He is the 10th Nordique to commit to playing NCAA Division One Hockey. In the near future, he will join six other current NAHLers to play at Anchorage.
