Generals forward McGraw makes NCAA DI commitment

November 24, 2023

The Northeast Generals, proud members of the North American Hockey League, are excited to announce that veteran forward Joseph McGraw has committed to play his NCAA Division I Hockey for Army-West Point in Atlantic Hockey.

McGraw, 17, is in his third year playing in the NAHL with the Generals after joining them when he was just 15 years old. He has been youngest player in the league for the past two seasons and his potential was immediately clear.

During the 2021-22 season McGraw played 26 games and registered 3 goals. But his confidence grew each game. In 2022-23 his improvement was evident as he was impactful all 200 feet of ice. In 43 games he registered 12 points but gained valuable experience.

This season the 6’0/170 lbs. native of Sugar Land, TX,  has elevated his game to new heights. He has carved out a huge role with the Generals playing in all situations. He has recorded 11 points with 6 goals (including 2 game winning goals) so far in the 2023-24 season.

“Joey McGraw is an amazing young man. Not a lot of 15-year-olds would be able to trust the process the way he did. Matt Dibble (former Generals GM) and I along with Joey came up with a very clear plan for his development. Huge credit goes to Joey for sticking through the ups and downs. His work ethic is crazy and has allowed his growth to accelerate this season. His ability to take in coaching and then implement it immediately is very high. He has a tremendous hockey IQ. He is a big power forward that has elite speed and hands. He is only scratching the surface of his tremendous potential,” said Generals GM/Head Coach Bryan Erikson.

McGraw becomes the 3rd General to commit to West Point. He joins a list that includes former 2 time All American (first in school and Atlantic Hockey history) Colin Bilek (now in the Blackhawks Organization). He also will join Freshman Brent Keefer who is second on Army with 4 goals and 6 points through 10 games.

“We are lucky to have such a tremendous relationship with Coach Riley and Coach McKelvie. They are both great men that have always done right by their players. Joey is making a huge commitment to serve for his Country. He is a phenomenal young man that has chosen service. And he will not get two better mentor’s in College hockey than Coach Riley and Coach McKelvie,” continued Erikson.
