Maryland forward El-Bashir makes NCAA DI commitment

The Maryland Black Bears of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that forward Kareem El-Bashir has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for Army-West Point in Atlantic Hockey.

El-Bashir, 19, is in his second season playing in the NAHL for the Black Bears. The 5’10/176 lbs. native of Reston, VA, is off to a fast start during the 2023-24 season. El-Bashir is tied for 2nd in team scoring with 13 points in 10 games played, which includes four goals and nine assists.

“I’m proud and excited to announce my commitment to play Division I hockey and further my education at Army West Point. I want to thank my family, coaches and teammates for helping me earn this incredible opportunity,” said El-Bashir.

El-Bashir was named the East Division’s Star of the Week this past week as helped his club to a weekend home sweep of the Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks. El-Bashir had five points in the two wins. On Friday, El-Bashir had a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win. On Saturday, he scored two goals and added an assist in a 6-0 win.

“Kareem has taken huge strides this season, and his growth has been meteoric. Based on how much effort this kid puts into the weight room, and his off-season training, as well as his willingness to learn, this is not a surprise to be coaching staff. Not only is he a great teammate and high-level hockey player, but his academic profile is elite as well. He will be a very nice NCAA Division I student/athlete,” said Maryland head coach Clint Mylymok.

During the 2022-23 season, El-Bashir appeared in 45 regular season games for the Black Bears and recorded 16 points. He also added two goals in 10 Robertson Cup Playoff games.
