Springfield goalie Reid makes NCAA DI commitment

July 10, 2023

The Springfield Jr. Blues, proud members of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), are pleased to announce that Top Prospects goaltender Aksel Reid has committed to play NCAA Division I Hockey for Union College in the ECAC next season.

After playing seven games for the Jr. Blues during the 2021-22 season, the 6’1/185 lbs. native of Minneapolis, MN appeared in 39 games during the 2022-23 regular season, posting 2.82 goals against average and a .911 save percentage.

Reid, 19, was also selected to and played in the 2023 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament for the East Division team where he stopped 34 of 36 shots in two games.

“Aksel has the character and skill that any team would want,” said Head Coach Todd Pococke. “Union is getting a great goaltender, but an even better person and we look forward to tracking his progress at the Division 1 level.”

“I am very excited to announce my commitment to play Division 1 hockey and continue my education at Union College. Thank you so much to my family, coaches, and friends for helping me reach this goal. Thank you to everyone in Springfield for making the last two years so special. I couldn’t have hoped for a better place to play,” said Reid.

Reid joins Nikita Nikora (Dartmouth), Cole Lonsdale (RIT), Jake Peterson (Air Force), Adyn Merrick (Northern Michigan), Tyler Borgula (Quinnipiac), James Callahan (Air Force), Marcus Broberg (Omaha), Hagen Moe (Bowling Green), Hayden Riva (Lake Forest), Carter Cloutier (Lawrence), and Ben Edwards (St. Norbert) to make an NCAA commitment.

Reid began his NAHL career with the Bismarck Bobcats at the start of the 2021-22 season, appearing in six games before being traded to Springfield. Prior to his junior hockey career, Reid spent four seasons at the prestigious Blake School in Minnesota.
