Friday Finals: Bobcats bomb their way to another Division Finals

April 20, 2013

Cody Dixon scored the OT-winner as the Austin Bruins took a 2-1 series lead with a 3-2 win on the road in Minot in Game 3 on Friday.

Central Division Semi-Final, Game #3

Bismarck Bobcats 6 @ Brookings Blizzard 0 (Bismarck wins series, 3-0)

It was another impressive offensive performance as the Bismarck Bobcats exploded for six goals in Game 3 to complete a series sweep of the Brookings Blizzard with a 6-0 shutout in Brookings on Friday night.  In the three games, the Bobcats scored 20 goals and the Blizzard never really got their game going in any of the three games.  It took less than two minutes for the Bobcats to strike first on Friday as Matt Pohlkamp scored a power play goal and what would eventually end up as the game-winner.  The power play would prove to be lethal in the 2nd period as well as the Bobcats scored two more goals on the man advantage from Shane Omdahl and Stanislav Dzakhov.  Cory Chapman added two more goals in the 3rd period along with a goal from Bob Kinne to complete the 6-0 win and sweep.  It was more than enough for goalie Aaron Nelson who stopped all 25 shots for his first shutout of the 2013 playoffs. Bismarck moves onto the Central Finals, which will begin next weekend against the winner of the Austin vs. Minot series. Boxscore

Central Division Semi-Final, Game #3

Austin Bruins 3 @ Minot Minotauros 2 (OT) (Austin leads best of 5 series, 2-1)

In front of a packed house in Minot, Cody Dixon spoiled the home party with a goal seven minutes into overtime to give the Bruins a 3-2 win and a 2-1 lead in the best of 5 series.  The Minotauros had the early momentum as just 1:28 into the game they took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Lucas Oliver.  However, the Bruins struck right back on the power play as John Simonson scored to make it a 1-1 game just four minutes into the contest.  The Bruins took their first lead of the night early in the 2nd period as AJ Reid scored to make it 2-1.  However, late in the period, Wesley Iverson would strike for Minot with the equalizer to make it 2-2.  After a scoreless 3rd period, which saw 18 combined shots for the two teams, the game would be decided in OT for a second straight game.  This time however, it was the Bruins with the winner as Dixon got the puck down the right wing, swooped around the defense and slipped a shot between the legs of Minot goalie Tyler Parks, who was knocked over right after the puck slid across the goalline for the game winner.  Parks made 34 saves in the loss, while Nick Lehr picked up the win making 31 saves. West Division Semi-Final, Game #3

Fairbanks Ice Dogs 1 @ Kenai River Brown Bears 2 (Kenai River leads best of 5 series, 2-1)

In front of a record-breaking playoff crowd, the Kenai River Brown Bears got two late 3rd period goals to defeat the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in Game 3 of their West Division Semi-Final.  The Brown Bears now lead 2-1 in the best of 5 series.  Even though they were outshot 23-12 in the first two periods, it was the Ice Dogs who had a 1-0 lead courtesy of a Jayson Angus goal and 23 saves from Steve Perry.  In the 3rd period, the Brown Bears took advantage of the second life afforded them by goalie Marcus Zelzer, who made several big saves.  Alec Butcher was trying to feed Alex Jackstadt when the puck bounced to a wide-open Vincent Stefan at the top of the faceoff circle, who shot love to the glove side and beat Perry to tie the game at 1-1.  Jake Davidson scored the game-winner with just 1:46 to play after some hard work by Brad Duwe who burst in the zone and drove to net, only to get the puck to Zac Lazzaro, who fed a wide open Davidson for the game-winning goal.  Boxscore
