Weekend Wrap-Up: Fresno, Soo pick up Sunday wins

March 3, 2013

Fresno 5 @ Wenatchee 4 (OT) – Two goals in the final seconds, one in regulation and one in overtime, we enough to lead the Fresno Monsters to a 5-4 come-from-behind win in overtime to salvage a weekend split with the Wenatchee Wild. Trevor Husch scored the first goal and the last goal, both on the power play to lead the Monsters. It was the Monsters jumping out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Husch.  The Wild responded late in the period with a goal from Jono Davis.  Fresno would again regain the lead thanks to another early period goal, this time in the 2nd period as Ian Janco scored.  However, that was countered by two goals from Wild forwards Brian Williams and Max McHugh to make it 3-2.  Trevor Stewart scored for the Wild to make it 4-2 early in the 3rd period.  Fresno started their comeback and cut the lead to 4-3 on a goal from Matt Salituro, and then with less than a minute remaining, Karl Andersen tied the game at 4-4. In the overtime, Husch scored again on the power play, this time with just :05 seconds remaining in the extra frame. Boxscore

Soo 4 @ Kalamazoo 1 - The Soo Eagles and Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings played their last game of the season against each other on Sunday afternoon, and it was the stellar goaltending by Tyler Marble that propelled Soo to the 4-1 win.  The Eagles wasted no time picking right up where they left off in Saturday’s victory, as they scored the game’s first goal just 1:10 into the contest. Michael Lant worked his way into the left circle and fired a backhander into the back of the net to put the Jr. K-Wings down one goal.  Sean Murphy put Soo on the board again to extend the lead to 2-0 with a rocket shot from the slot. Kyle Gattelaro cut the deficit to 2-1 at 7:24 in the third, but that would would be as close as the K-Wings would come to tying the game up. With less than 30 seconds remaining, The Eagles got a pair of empty net goals from Jared VanWormer and Brandon Adams to seal the 4-1 victory. Boxscore
