Wahlin's OT winner pushes Austin past Aberdeen
Austin 3 @ Aberdeen 2 (OT) – In a game that started off with four combined goals in the 1st period, but took a defensive turn the rest of the game. Both goaltenders locked down their opposing offenses, but the game ended quickly in overtime as Bruins leading scorer Brandon Wahlin scored for Austin to give the Bruins a 3-2 win at the Odde Ice Center to move the Bruins into 3rd place in the Central Division while Aberdeen fell to 4th place.
All the action in the first 11 minutes of the game came from the sticks of Austin's John Kirby and C.J. Smith and Aberdeen's Joseph Sullivan and Paul Prescott who each scored. Kirby scored first just over two minutes into the game as he slipped a shot past Wings goaltender Marcus Zelzer with a helper from Colton Kramer. Joe Sullivan tied the game at 1-1 with his 10th goal of the season with assists from Caleb O’Brien and Lane Mahoney. Just :39 seconds later, Paul Prescott have Aberdeen a 2-1 lead with assists from Trevor Husch and Mike Parnell. Austin would not trail for long as :37 seconds after Aberdeen took the lead, CJ Smith scored to tie the game at 2-2 with helpers from Charlie Adams and Christian Folin.
That’s when the defensives took over. The Wings puts consistent pressure on Austin goalie Tyler Bruggeman in the third period, but Bruggeman made several outstanding saves and finished with 34 for the game. In overtime, a great individual effort by John Simonson on the forecheck got the puck from the corner to the high slot where Wahlin fired a shot over the glove of Zelzer for the Bruins OT win.
