NAHL Weekend Preview

March 31, 2023

Three weekends of hockey remain in the 2022-23 NAHL regular as just 10 more playoff spots hang in the balance.

As the calendar turns to April it is a full sprint for teams to secure of the final playoff spots. There are also three more regular season division champions to be crowned.

It was another good week for NCAA commitments as six more players made their plans known. So far, a total of 229 players who are playing in the NAHL or are NAHL alumni are committed to play NCAA hockey. That number includes 11 players who recently played in the 2023 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament.

In the Central this weekend, it has boiled down to must-win territory for both Bismarck and Minot, who are on the outside looking in the playoffs. Minot is four points behind Aberdeen for the final spot as visit the Wings this weekend. Bismarck hosts 3rd place North Iowa as they are six points back. 1st and 2nd place will tangle on Saturday as Austin host St. Cloud after the Norsemen won the series opener on Thursday, 4-2.

In the East, it is must-win time for Johnstown as they are in Maine for two games and needing wins as they are seven points out of the final playoff spot. That final spot is held by the Northeast Generals, who are New Jersey. Maryland looks to lock up the Division crown with a series in Philadelphia.

In the wild Midwest there are a couple huge series in Alaska as 6th place Anchorage hosts the 4th place Chippewa Steel and the 3rd place Kenai River Brown Bears on the road to face the 5th place Fairbanks Ice Dogs. All four of those teams are separated by four points. Wisconsin looks to maintain their division led with home series against Springfield and the Wilderness look to keep pace with the Windigo with two games in Janesville.

In the South, Oklahoma is hosting Shreveport with the Warriors looking to lock up the division, while the Mudbugs need a win to clinch a playoff spot. The race for the final playoff spot is down to two points thanks to a four-game winning streak by Amarillo and a three-game slide by New Mexico. The Ice Wolves look to right the ship in El Paso and Amarillo is in Corpus Christi for one more game on Friday after winning 4-3 on Thursday. The final series has Lone Star in Odessa.
