Friday Finals: Nordiques stay hot with shutout of Maryland

Nik Hong had the overtime-winner on Friday to help the Norsemen move into 3rd place in the Central as they are now 7-0-1 in their last eight games.

Maine 1 @ Maryland 0: The Nordiques continued to improve their playoff bid, shutting out the East Division leaders and winning 1-0. The defensive bout remained scoreless until 1:15 remaining in the final period when Aidan Coupe lit the lamp from Brendan Gibbons and Nicholas Bernardo. Kael Depape was the MVP for the Nordiques, stopping all 32 shots faced. William Hakansson kept out 19 of 20 in the loss. 

Odessa 1 @ Oklahoma 6: Joey Delgreco scored twice and added a helper as the Oklahoma Warriors won their 12th straight contest, this time winning 6-1 over the Odessa Jakalopes. William Lawson-Body ended the night with three assists while Hunter Jones, Blaise Miller, Garrett Horsager and Owen Baumgartner all lit the lamp for the Warriors in the win. Emerson Goode had the only tally for Odessa. Daniel Duris got plenty of him in front of him as he needed just 14 saves to secure the victory. Gergely Orosz and Quentin Sigurdsinteamed up to stop 22 of 27 shots. 

St. Cloud 5 @ Bismarck 4 (OT): Nik Hong’s goal in overtime was the difference as St. Cloud topped Bismarck 5-4. The Norsemen got out to an early lead in the first period as Anthony Ruklic and Andrew Clarke got on the board first. Then Tyler Dysart increased the St. Cloud lead to 3-1. Julian Beaumont, Calvin Hanson and Drew Holt would all score in the middle frame to give Bismarck the lead. Kade Peterson would score with just under eight minutes left to tie the game and force the extra period. Tomas Bolo stopped 25 shots in order to grab the win. Linards Lipskis stopped 15 shots. 

Anchorage 2 @ Wisconsin 1 (SO): The Wolverines picked up a much needed two points Friday night, snapping a three-game losing skid after winning 2-1 in the shootout over Wisconsin. Anchorage’s Joe Cesario broke the deadlock with his 15th goal of the season 19:36 into the opening frame. The Windigo wouldn’t even score until the 3:22 mark left in the final frame when Zachary Burfoot tickled twine. Jackson Reineke and Kyle Bauer were both successful in their shootout attempts for the Wolverines. Shane Soderwall and Gavin Moffatt were both strong for their respective teams, Soderwall stopping 32 of 33 and Moffatt keeping out 29 of 30 in the loss. 

Philadelphia 0 @ Northeast 2: The Generals also snapped a three-game losing streak after shutting out the Rebels 2-0. Ryan Remick picked up the first goal of the contest 12:24 into the 1st period, his 11th of the year. A scoreless 2nd led to a battle in the 3rd period, where Paul Minnehan iced the game with an empty netter 18:09 into the period. Topy Hopp was perfect in between the pipes for Northeast, stopping all 22 shots faced. Jakub Krbecek kept out all but one of 32 shots faced for Philadelphia. 

Springfield 2 @ Chippewa 3: A pair of goals from Sam Rice, most recent Midwest Star of the Week, helped lift the Steel past Springfield 3-2. Peyton Platter and Rice both found the back of the net in the first 20 minutes. Rice added his 2nd of the game and 18th of the season 7:10 into the 2nd period to provide more insurance. Hayden Riva and Nikita Nikora both scored for the Jr. Blues before the halfway point of the 3rd period but the Steel were able to hold on and finish out the victory. Adam Gajan kept out 27 of 29 for Chippewa while Aksel Reid made 25 stops for Springfield in the loss. 

North Iowa 2 @ Austin 5: After falling to the Bulls in shutout fashion last Saturday, the Bruins got revenge over North Iowa and took them down 5-2. Blake Ulve and Simone Dadie provided North Iowa’s two goals early in the contest, scoring 17 seconds apart early in the 1st period to get the visitors up early. Gavin Morrissey got Austin on the board with his 10th of the season just 90 seconds later. Walter Zacher would end up tying things up late in the 2nd period. In the 3rd, Josh Giuliani scored the eventual game winner 6:03 into the period. Jackson Luther picked up a clutch shorthanded goal with 3:10 remaining to double the lead before Austin Salani sealed it with an empty netter a minute later. Ethan Robertson and Tyler Fromolz, recent call up from the Oregon Tradesmen of the NA3HL, combined for 20 saves in the win. Mitch Day kept out 38 shots for the Bulls. 

Lone Star 4 @ Amarillo 2: Dhillon Wilde scored a pair of goals as the Lone Star Brahmas doubled up the Amarillo Wranglers by a score of 4-2. David Skuhrovec also scored in the opening frame for Lone Star. Matthew Macdonald provided more insurance in the second period and that would be all the Brahmas would need to close things out. Zack Kent and Pierce Patterson provided the offense for Amarillo. William Gramme picked up the win in goal, making 30 saves. Luca Ganz wa the loser in net tonight as he racked up 22 saves.

Shreveport 5 @ New Mexico 4: It was a back-and-forth affair between Shreveport and New Mexico as the Mudbugs took a 2-0 lead early in the second period after goals from Hayden Nichol and Garrett Steele. Sully Scholle brought New Mexico within one but Kason Muscutt responded with his sixth of the season to keep it a two goal game. New Mexico would tie things up before the end of the middle period as William Howard and Ryan Johnson scored just 1:18 in the final minutes. Jack Dalton scored just over nine minutes into the third period but Ryan Austin scored just 54 seconds later and then 40 seconds after that, Steele notched his second goal of the game to put the Mudbugs up for good, ensuring a 5-4 win. Simon Bucheler picked up the win in net as he made 30 saves. Carsen Stokes suffered the loss, he stopped 25 shots. 

Aberdeen 4 @ Minot 1: Alexander Gullichsen registered three assists and four other players lit the lamp as the Aberdeen Wings defeated the Minot Minotauros by a score of 4-1. Chase LaPinta logged is 23rd goal of the year just about midway through the opening period. Aberdeen tied things up on Roope Tuomioksa’s second tally of the year in the second period. Then in the third, the Wings scored three times in a five minute span as Zachary Reim, Logan Gravnik and Nikolai Tishkevich all got on the scoresheet for Aberdeen. Cole Moore was nearly perfect as he made 35 saves on 36 attempts. Lawton Zacher denied 33 of the 36 shots he faced. 

Corpus Christi 4 @ El Paso 1: Blake Lewis and Logan Neilson each logged a goal and an assist as the Corpus Christi IceRays knocked off the El Paso Rhinos by a score of 4-1. Nils Forselius and Lewis got the IceRays out to an early lead, each scoring their ninth of the year. Neilson increased the lead to three with his fifth of the campaign. AJ Reed would bring the Rhinos within two but that’s as close as they would ever get as Anthony Cafarelli chipped in an empty goal to seal the win for Corpus Christi. Patrick Jurcak was sensational as he made 37 saves. Nolan Suggs was dealt the loss despite making 24 saves.
