Maryland defenseman Kilcullen makes NCAA DI commitment

November 22, 2022

Maryland defenseman Sean Kilcullen played in the NAPHL prior to the NAHL and also played in the 2022 and 2021 NAHL Top Prospects Tournaments.

The Maryland Black Bears, proud members of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), are pleased to announce that Top Prospects defenseman Sean Kilcullen has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for UMass-Lowell in Hockey East.

Kilcullen, 20, is another great example of the NAPHL to NAHL Ladder of Development success story.

The 6’0/190 lbs. native of Kensington, MD, is currently in his third season of playing junior hockey in the NAHL with the Black Bears. So far during the 2022-23 campaign, Kilcullen is having his best career season with 21 points (4 goals, 17 assists) through 21 games played to date. His 21 points currently leads all NAHL defensemen in scoring.

“I am extremely proud and honored to officially announce my commitment to play division 1 college hockey at UMass-Lowell! Thank you to my friends, teammates, coaches, and most importantly my family for the all the support along the way,” said Kilcullen.

During the 2021-22 season, Kilcullen recorded 21 points (1 goal, 20 assists) in 58 regular season games for the Black Bears. He was also selected to and played in the 2022 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament for the East Division team.

Kilkullen made his NAHL debut with the Black Bears during the 2019-20 season where he was also playing in the NAPHL for the Team Maryland 18U team of the NAPHL. Kilkullen appeared in 13 total NAPHL games that season.

During the 2020-21 season, Kilcullen appeared in 39 regular season games for the Black Bears in the NAHL and recorded 13 points (1 goal, 12 assists). He was also selected to and played in the 2021 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament for the East Division team.

“We have known Sean for quite a long time, and to see a local product follow the pathway through Maryland, to an NCAA commitment has been impressive. He is a very talented defenseman, a really good leader for our team, and will be a very good Division 1 hockey player. Congrats to Sean and his family,” said Black Bears head coach Clint Mylymok.
