NAHL Weekend Preview

April 1, 2022

Just three weekends and a handful of games remain in the 2021-22 NAHL regular season as the race to secure one of the remaining 12 Robertson Cup Playoff spots has reached an all-out sprint.

NAHL Combines are in full swing and the Robertson Cup Playoffs begin on April 21st. As a reminder, the top four teams in each division qualify for the playoffs. To date, only four spots have been claimed.

This weekend features 26 games on the schedule from Friday-Sunday.

It was another huge week for NCAA commitments as eight more players committed to play NCAA hockey, bringing the current season total to 224 players.

In the Central Division this weekend, thanks to a win on Wednesday night, the St. Cloud Norsemen are just one win away from winning the division as they tangle with North Iowa on Friday, Austin on Saturday, and Janesville on Sunday. It is basically a must-win scenario for both North Iowa and Bismarck. The Bull have the one remaining game this week in St. Cloud, while the Bobcats face 2nd place Aberdeen in a home-and-home series. Austin has just the one game against St. Cloud on Saturday and Minot is idle.

In the East, things could not be any tighter between teams 2-5. Maryland is in 2nd place, but just two points ahead of Jamestown, whom they visit this weekend for two huge games. The 3rd place Johnstown Tomahawks face a tough task as they are in New Jersey for two games against the East Champion Titans. Finally, Maine in Danbury for two games and then will face the Generals on Sunday as Northeast sits in a tie for the final playoff spot with Jamestown.

In the Midwest, Springfield and Fairbanks are in a two-horse race for the title, five point clear of 3rd place. The Ice Dogs are in Kenai River to face their rival Brown Bears for two games, while the Jr. Blues are at the Wilderness for one more game on Friday after falling 5-2 on Thursday. Janesville is in must-win mode as they are at the Magicians for the final two games in Richfield and then home against the Norsemen on Sunday. The Jets sit in 5th place, two points back of Anchorage and four points against of the Magicians. The Wolverines have a two-point lead for the division’s final playoff spot and host Chippewa for two more games this weekend after the Steel took home a shootout win on Thursday.

In the South, it’s a two-horse race for the division title. The 1st place Brahmas are two points ahead of New Meixco and host Amarillo this weekend. The Ice Wolves are in Wichita Falls for a potential playoff preview against the Warriors. The Odessa Jackalopes have to win their series against 4th place Shreveport as they trail the Mudbugs for the final playoff spot by six points with just six games remaining. El Paso and Corpus Christi will finish their series on Friday after the Rhinos snapped a 21-game slide on Thursday with a 6-2 win.
