NAHL, NAPHL alum Fanti signs NHL contract with Oilers

March 29, 2022

Ryan Fanti played two years in the NAHL and two years in the NAPHL. He also played in the 2018 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament.

The NHL’s Edmonton Oilers have signed former NAHL and NAPHL goaltender Ryan Fanti from the University of Minnesota-Duluth to a two-year contract beginning with the 2022-23 season. Fanti will join the AHL's Bakersfield Condors on an amateur tryout (ATO) contract for the remainder of the 2021-22 campaign.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound netminder recently completed his second full season with the Bulldogs, appearing in 37 games and recording a 20-12-4 record, 1.83 goals-against average, .929 save percentage and seven shutouts.

The 22-year-old Thunder Bay, Ont., native followed up on his impressive regular season with back-to-back shutouts over Denver and Western Michigan to lead UMD to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference playoff title.

He then posted a third-straight shutout against Western Michigan to open the NCAA tournament, but Denver got its revenge on the Bulldogs in the regional final this past Saturday with a 2-1 decision, as Fanti made 32 saves in the defeat. Oilers 2020 draft pick Carter Savoie scored the game-winner for Denver.

For his work in the crease this season, Fanti notched NCHC Goaltender of the Year honors, as well as garnering All-NCHC First Team recognition. During the NCHC Frozen Faceoff in St. Paul, Fanti posted back-to-back shutouts to help the Bulldogs to their third conference title in program history. He was named the NCHC Frozen Faceoff's Most Outstanding Player for his performance in St. Paul.

Fanti ends his collegiate career with a 31-19-6 record, 2.01 GAA and .921 SV%. He was also a two-time selection for the NCHC All-Conference Academic Team.

Prior to playing for Minnesota-Duluth, Fanti played two seasons in the NAHL for the Minnesota Wilderness. During the 2018-19 campaign,  Fanti posted a 19-18-2 record in 37 games played with a 2.70 goals against average and a .917 save percentage. During his rookie campaign in 2017-18, he posted an 18-9-1 record with a 2.60 goals against average with a .922 save percentage.

He was also selected to play in the 2018 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament for the Central Division team.

Fanti is another shining example of the success of the NAPHL to NAHL Ladder of Development. Prior to playing in the NAHL, Fanti spent two full seasons playing in the NAPHL for the Thunder Bay Kings 18U team. He also played in the 2016 NAPHL Top Prospects Tournament for the North Division team. His performance in the NAPHL led to his signing a tender with the Wilderness during the 2016-17 season.
