St. Cloud defenseman Murr makes NCAA DI commitment

February 22, 2022

St. Cloud Norsemen of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that defenseman Evan Murr announced his commitment to play NCAA Division I hockey at Minnesota State University in the CCHA following his junior hockey career.

Murr, 18, is the top scoring defender on the Norsemen roster with 11 goals, 17 assists and 28 points in 38 games played this season, and is also a +19. The 5’11/178 lbs. native of Stillwater, MN, is the point man on the St. Cloud power play in addition to his defensive abilities, with 9 of his points coming on the man-advantage.

“The program at Minnesota State has had a lot of success in recent years,” Murr said. “Their facilities are great and they have such a good following. They pack their barn every night and seeing the atmosphere there, I definitely had my eyes on it.”

In the month of January, Murr’s play helped the Norsemen kick off a 10-game win streak, working up to first place in the NAHL Central Division at the midway point of February. Murr was named the North American Hockey League Defenseman of the Month in January, putting up 14 points in just 10 games played, which included five goals, nine assists, and a +7 rating.

“Growing up in Minnesota, with so many good hockey schools, I wanted to be able to play my college hockey in Minnesota and stay close to home,” Murr said. “Having my family closeby and being able to have them be as much of a part of my journey and come to my games was a big factor.”

Murr becomes one of five NCAA Division I committed players on the active roster and is the eighth in the Norsemen lineup this season. Other Norsemen commits include: Brandon Lajoie (Alaska-Anchorage), Ryan O’Neill (Univ. of St. Thomas), John Opilka (St. Cloud State), Blake Perbix (Northern Michigan).
