Amarillo forward Prohorenkovs makes NCAA DI commitment

February 16, 2022

The Amarillo Wranglers of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are proud to announce forward Glebs Prohorenkovs has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for Niagara University in Atlantic Hockey.

Prohorenkovs, 20, has been a consistent producer for the upstart Wranglers at both ends of the ice. The 6’1/185 lbs. native of Riga, Latvia, becomes the second player for the Wranglers to announce his college commitment in the franchise’s inaugural year.

“We are very excited for Glebs as he reflects the culture we are building in Amarillo. Glebs has earned this opportunity through his on-ice play and daily leadership,” Wranglers Head Coach Harry Mahood said. “He can make an immediate impact with Niagara and can have a long and prosperous professional career as well.”

Prohorenkovs has provided a scoring touch to the Wranglers, collecting 35 points (12 goals, 23 assists) in 39 games so far this season. His 35 points are currently second-most on the team behind Kristaps Skrastins. The center-man has been a considerable part of the team’s success on the power-play by winning face-offs and collecting 13 assists on the power play.

Prohorenkovs will be joining the Purple Eagles of Niagara University, who are members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and are a Division I program. The Purple Eagles play in Lewiston, NY, and have made four NCAA tournament appearances since 2000.

Prohorenkovs was named one of the alternate captains earlier in the season and has provided steady leadership in the locker room. The 2021-22 season is the first season that Prohorenkovs has played in North America, and the adjustment to the different style did not take long for the star forward.

“It will be fun to follow his development through college and then on to professional hockey in the future,” Mahood said.
