NAHL Weekend Preview

December 10, 2021

The NAHL continues to close in on the Christmas holiday with 25 games in the schedule in the second week of December.

The league continued its commitments this past weekend, with five more players announcing their NCAA Division I commitments, bringing the current season total to 131 players.

One of the things the NAHL does better than any other junior league is seeing their players earn an NCAA opportunity while playing and being showcased in the NAHL. During the 2020-21 season, a record number of 395 NAHL players made NCAA commitments, with 293 of those (74%) being a record number of NCAA Division I commitments.

The parity in the NAHL so far this season is very evident and the standings are tight with no division leader enjoying a lead of more than two points or less.

In the Central Division this weekend, the red-hot Aberdeen Wings put their three-game winning streak on the line as they host the Minot Minotauros, who are just two points head in 3rd place. The Austin Bruins, who are tied for 1st place, host the Bismarck Bobcats. The other two teams are in out-of-division series as North Iowa hosts Springfield and St. Cloud takes on the Wilderness in a home-and-home series.

In the East, 1st place New Jersey is in Johnstown to take on the Tomahawks, who are 3-0-1 in their last four games. The Jamestown Rebels continue their roadtrip as they are in Maine for a pair of games. The 2nd place Maryland Black Bears are in Danbury to take on the last place Jr. Hat Tricks. Northeast is idle.

In the Midwest, the battle of Alaska continues in Anchorage as the Wolverines host the Brown Bears. The 1st place Fairbanks Ice Dogs put their four-game winning streak on the line in Chippewa. The Wilderness go out of the division to take on the Norsemen in a home-and-home series and Springfield puts their four-game winning streak on the line in North Iowa. The Jets and Magicians are idle.

In the South, it’s a full slate of game as Amarillo looks to sweep a series from Corpus Christi on Friday after winning on Thursday, 2-1. 2nd place New Mexico is in Odessa to take on the Jackalopes. Shreveport looks to continue their winning ways with a series in El Paso, and Wichita Falls is in Lone Star with the two teams deadlocked for the final playoff spot in the standings.
