NAHL Weekend Preview

October 15, 2021

The NAHL continues its 2021-22 regular season this weekend with 25 games from Friday-Sunday.

This weekend features the inaugural home opening games in the NAHL for both the Anchorage Wolverines and the El Paso Rhinos.

It was a big week for NAHL alumni this past week. 35 former players began the season on NHL rosters and even more players are making an impact at the NCAA Division 1 level. A third of freshmen playing NCAA Division I hockey this season are NAHL alumni.

To date, the NAHL has 98 current players in the league during the 2021-22 season who are committed to play NCAA Division I hockey.

One of the things the NAHL does better than any other junior league is seeing their players earn an NCAA opportunity while playing and being showcased in the NAHL. During the 2020-21 season, a record number of 395 NAHL players made NCAA commitments, with 293 of those (74%) being a record number of NCAA Division I commitments.

The hottest team in the Central Division, the North Iowa Bulls put their 1st place 7-2-1 record on the line this weekend as they host the Minot Minotauros, who are looking to snap a two-game slide. The 2nd place Austin Bruins look to keep pace with North Iowa with their 6-2-1 record on the line as they host the Bismarck Bobcats. Both St. Cloud and Aberdeen are idle this weekend.

In the East, the red-hot and 1st place Maryland Black Bears are on the road to face the Jamestown Rebels. The Northeast Generals are looking to snap a three-game losing streak as they host the New Jersey Titans. The Maine Nordiques are back after a week off as they put their three-game winning streak on the line in Johnstown. Danbury is idle.

In the Midwest, the battle for Minnesota resumes as the hottest team in the league, the Minnesota Wilderness, put their five-game winning streak on the line in a home-and-home series against the Minnesota Magicians. The 1st place Springfield Jr. Blues make their first ever trip to Anchorage for three games against the Wolverines, who are tied for 4th. The final series features the Fairbanks Ice Dogs putting their three-game winning streak on the line as they host the Chippewa Steel, who have lost four straight. Janesville and Kenai River are idle.

In the South, it is a jam-packed schedule with all eight teams in action. The 1st place Odessa Jackalopes put their three-game winning streak on the line as they are the first NAHL opponent to play in El Paso against the Rhinos. The Wichita Falls Warriors will face a key series as they face their rivals from two hours South as the Lone Star Brahmas come calling. The Amarillo Wranglers are on the road as they look to snap a two-game losing streak as they play the Shreveport Mudbugs. The final series has the New Mexico Ice Wolves beginning their 11-game homestand with their home-opening series against the Corpus Christi IceRays.
