Lone Star forward Purcell makes NCAA D1 commitment

November 24, 2020

Ladder of Development: Zach Purcell played three seasons in the NAPHL prior to playing in the NAHL this season and earning an NCAA Division 1 commitment.

The Lone Star Brahmas of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that forward and NAPHL grad Zach Purcell has committed to play NCAA Division 1 hockey at American International College (AIC) in Atlantic Hockey.

“I couldn’t have done it without my teammates and all the people fighting in my corner,” said Purcell, regarding his commitment. “It’s been my dream to play college hockey and I’ll be able to play against the Air Force Academy, which is in my home state. I couldn’t have done it without all of the hours my coaches and teammates put in that aren’t seen by others.”

Purcell, 20, who is playing in his first season in the NAHL, is currently on a four-game point streak, totaling ten points (4 goals, 6 assists) in eight games played so far during the 2020-21 season. The 5’9/165 lbs. native of Aurora, Colorado, has appeared in all contests played by the Brahmas in the season thus far. In addition, he leads the team in shot percentage with a value of 30.8%. Purcell also ranks in the top-20 skaters across the entire NAHL in points and assists (6).

Purcell is another NAPHL to NAHL ladder of development success story. He played in three NAPHL seasons, all with the Rocky Mountain RoughRiders leading up to this year. During the 2017-18 season, was named to the All-NAPHL 18U 3rd Team and played in the 2018 NAPHL 18U All-Star Game. In three NAPHL seasons, Purcell appeared in 55 total games and had 53 points.

“On behalf of the Lone Star Brahmas, we’d like to congratulate Zach on his commitment to American International College,” said the assistant coach of the Brahmas, Andrew Whiteside. “AIC is getting a player with an elite skill set and someone who has shown perseverance throughout the ranks of junior hockey.”

He is the 10th player on the Brahmas 2020-21 roster who has committed to play hockey at an NCAA Division 1 school.
