Knights forward Currie makes NCAA D1 commitment

July 28, 2020

Prior to playing in the NAHL and earning his NCAA Division 1 commitment, Zak Currie played in the NAPHL for the Meijer AAA organization.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights formerly of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that forward Zak Currie has committed to play NCAA Division 1 hockey for the University of St. Thomas.

Currie, 21, was one of the offensive leaders for the Knights this past season. The 5’11/175 lbs. native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, posted 38 points (17 goals, 21 assists) in 51 games played. He was named the NAHL’s East Division Star of the Week on January 13th.

“We are very happy for Zak committing to St. Thomas. Zak was a crucial part of what we built in Wilkes-Barre over the past two seasons,” said Knights Head Coach/GM Tom Kowal. “Zak's approach to the game, both on and off the ice will make him a great addition to St. Thomas program and University. We wish him the best of luck in the next step of his hockey journey."

Currie made his NAHL debut with the Knights during the 2017-18 season, appearing in four games. Currie played that season in the NAPHL with the Meijer AAA 18U team, leading the team in scoring with 22 points in 18 NAPHL games. That also included playing in the 2018 NAPHL 18U All-Star Game.

“My NAPHL experience proved to be a very important stepping-stone and is one of the reasons I am where I am today. I was able to prepare and be exposed to the NAHL, which opened all the right doors. I am thankful for my time in the NAPHL and NAHL,” said Currie.

Currie then spent the 2018-19 season with the Knights in the NAHL, recording 17 points in 58 games played. Overall in his NAHL career, Currie posted 55 points in 113 career games.
