The Amarillo Bulls of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) have announced that veteran forward and Team NAHL member Nick Trela has committed to play NCAA Division 1 hockey for St. Lawrence University of ECAC Hockey.
Trela, 20, is in his second season in a Bulls sweater, playing in 100 NAHL games during the stint, including 13 postseason appearances during Amarillo’s 2019 Robertson Cup Playoffs campaign.
Through his 38 games in 2019-20, the team’s alternate captain has recorded 29 points on 10 goals and 19 assists. In 87 career NAHL regular season games, Trela, who was also named to the South Division Team in the 2020 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament, has recorded 49 career points.
“I knew in my heart it was the right choice,” said Trela, after accepting the offer. “The coaching staff is turning the program around and creating a new culture, and that’s something I want to be a part of. The academics are second to none, and I know this opportunity will be great for setting myself up for success in life. I would like to thank Coach Russo and Coach Lewis for helping me development and my family for always supporting me.”
Prior to the start of the 2019-20 season, the 6’2/176 lbs. native of Trenton, Michigan, joined Head Coach Rocky Russo as Amarillo’s representatives on Team NAHL at the 2019 Sirius Junior Club World Cup in Russia.
“We are very proud of Nick and excited for him and his family,” said Russo. “Nick is an excellent hockey player and an even better person and teammate. He is going to be a tremendous addition to Coach Brekke’s program both on the ice and in the classroom. Nick’s work ethic, compete level, and attention to detail will assure that he is successful at the next level and beyond.”
