NAHL Weekend Preview

September 27, 2019
After another record-breaking and exciting NAHL Showcase last weekend in Blaine, the NAHL gets back into action this weekend with a packed schedule of 25 games from Friday-Sunday.

It is the final weekend of the month as team’s look to continue momentum that was built up from last week’s event.

A total of four NAHL players made NCAA Division 1 commitments this past week, with many more to come in the following weeks. In addition, several NAHL players are expected to be on the initial NHL Central Scouting Players to Watch list, which is expected to be released in early October.

Also looming the near future is the final roster cut down, which must be at 23 players for all NAHL teams by October 1st.

In the Central Division this week, all six teams are in action. That includes the 1st place Minot Minotauros, who went 3-0-1 at the Showcase, as they take to the road for the inaugural game in St. Cloud for the Blizzard, who went 2-1-1 at the Showcase. The Aberdeen Wings will unveil their Robertson Cup National Championship banner as they open their 10th anniversary season at home against the Austin Bruins. Finally, the Bismarck Bobcats have their home opener, as they host the Minnesota Wilderness, who picked up three wins in four games at the Showcase.

In the East Division, the red-hot New Jersey Titans, who are off to a 5-1 start, visit Johnstown for the Tomahawks home opener. The Jamestown Rebels, who are still looking for their first win, will try and do so on the road with a three-game series at the Northeast Generals. The final series sees the Maryland Black Bears (2-4-0) on the road to face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, who are off to a 4-2-0 start. The Maine Nordiques are idle.

In the Midwest, the 1st place Chippewa Steel are idle and the Springfield Jr. Blues will face an out-of-division battle in their home-opener against the Topeka Pilots from the South Division. The Kenai River Brown Bears, who are one of only five NAHL teams who have yet to lose a game in regulation with a 2-0-2 mark, will face a tough road test in Minneapolis against the Magicians, who picked up just a single win at the Showcase. The final series is a battle of long-time division rivals Fairbanks and Janesville. The Ice Dogs scored just three goals in four games at the Showcase on their way to a 1-3 record, while the Jets went 3-1.

In the South Division with Topeka at Springfield for an out-of-division match-up, the attention turns to Albuquerque, New Mexico for the inaugural home-opening game of the New Mexico Ice Wolves in front of what is expected to be a couple of sold out crowds as they face the Jackalopes. New Mexico is looking for their first win, while Odessa is 1-0-1. The Amarillo Bulls open their 10th anniversary season at home with a key battle against Shreveport in a match-up of the past two South Division Champions. The final series has the 4-0 and undefeated Lone Star Brahmas hosting the Corpus Christi IceRays.
