June 10, 2019
The Johnstown Tomahawks of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that defenseman Chad Merrell committed to play NCAA Division III hockey for the University of New England.
Merrell, 20, just completed his second and final season playing in the NAHL. The 6’0/170 lbs. native of Boca Raton, Florida, recorded 14 points points (8 goals, 6 assists) in 30 games played with the Tomahawks during the 2018-19 season.
“Chad had an abbreviated season missing a long stretch of the season due to injury. His start with our team was phenomenal and then after adjusting back from injury he found that groove again heading into the playoffs, and was a huge part of our playoff run. He has so much to offer with his speed and tenacity. The University of New England is getting a great one with Chad,” said Tomahawks head coach Mike Letizia.
Merrell played the 2017-18 season with the Odessa Jackalopes in the NAHL, recording one assist in 17 games played.
University of New England is located in Biddeford Maine, and their team, the Nor’easters, plays in the Commonwealth Coast Conference as an NCAA Division III school.
