January 16, 2019
The Aberdeen Wings, proud members of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), are pleased to announce that goaltender Matt Vernon has committed to play NCAA Division I Hockey at Colorado College in the NCHC.
Vernon, 20, is in his second season with the Wings in the NAHL and in that time he has played in 52 regular season games and five playoff games. Vernon is having a career season so far in 2018-19, as has played in 29 games and has a 2.09 goals against average, which ranks 7th in the NAHL and a .931 save percentage, which ranks 4th. Vernon leads the NAHL in wins with 23 and is tied for the league shutout lead with four.
Vernon has been named the NAHL Central Division Star of the Week two times and was also named the NAHL Goaltender of the Month and USAJHM NAHL Player of the Month in December when he went a perfect 6-0-0 giving up just six goals in those six games.
Overall during his two-year NAHL career, he has posted a 40-9-3 record with a 2.05 goals against average and .924 save percentage.
“Matt is a perfect example of what the NAHL is all about. He has utilized his two years the right way and fought for this opportunity. He is a hard working individual that conducts himself like a pro. His work ethic and leadership are why he opened doors to play at the next level, and I believe will be the reason he has success at Colorado College,” said Wings Head Coach Scott Langer
“I want to thank the Wings organization, the Odde family, Coach Langer, Coach Hill, Coach Bohn, my billets, my teammates, the community of Aberdeen, my family and my friends for helping me with my journey to this point. I could not have done it without everyone. I look forward to finishing out the year strong and getting my college career started at Colorado College,” said Vernon.
