Saturday Scores: Sweeps shake up the standings

Shreveport 2 @ Lone Star 3 (SO) – The Brahmas moved their way past the Mudbugs into 3rd place in the South Division standings thanks to a 3-2 shootout win on Saturday, completing a weekend sweep of the Mudbugs. The Brahmas took a 1-0 lead late in the 1st period with the first goal of the season from Thomas Daskas. The Mudbugs seized control of the 2nd period with two goals from Conor Witherspoon to take a 2-1 lead. The Brahmas were able to tie the game with less than a minute remaining as Matt Guerra scored an extra-attacker goal to make it 2-2. In the shootout, Clayton Lackey played the hero for a second straight night, netting the only goal and securing the extra point for Lone Star. Seth Eisele made 23 saves in the win, while Leo Chuard made 28 saves in the loss.

 

Minot 4 @ Austin 2 – The Minotauros moved into 1st place in the Central Division thanks to a 4-2 win in Austin on Saturday, completing a weekend road sweep of the Bruins. Minot took a 2-1 lead in the 1st period with goals from Didrik Henbrant and Fritz Belisle, while Andrew Willis scored for the Bruins. Belisle added a 2nd period goal for the Minotauros to make it 3-1 after two periods. Dante Zapata scored early in the 3rd period to cut the lead to 3-2, but a late goal in the 3rd period from Justin Kelly made the final 4-2. Nick Grabko made 32 saves in the win, while Brett Miller made 21 saves in the loss.

 

Bismarck 6 @ Aberdeen 3 – Austin Jouppi scored twice and Atticus Kelly made 45 saves in his NAHL debut as the Bobcats secured a weekend road sweep in Aberdeen thanks to a 6-3 win on Saturday. After a scoreless 1st period, Bismarck scored three goals in the 2nd period, which included tallies from Ryan Taylor, Sam Malinski, and Jouppi. The Bobcats secured the win with three more goals in the 3rd period, which included the game-winner from Jouppi and others from Kirklan Irey and Adam Stacho. Nic Sicoly scored twice for the Wings and Brad Belisle had the other goal in the loss. Wings goalie Matt Vernon made 28 saves in the losing effort.

 

Brookings 4 @ MN Wilderness 5 – The Wilderness jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 5-4 win and weekend sweep of the visiting Blizzard. Minnesota went up 3-0 early in the 2nd period thanks to goals from Dylan Johnson, Jack Suchy, and Aaron Myers. While Suchy scored again, the Blizzard tried to make a game of things later in the period, scoring three goals from Owen Belisle, Bud Winter, and Carter Krogman. In the 3rd period Gavin Rasmussen scored his first goal of the season to provide the insurance the Wilderness would need. Brendan Aird would add a late goal for Brookings. Ryan Fanti made 33 saves in the win, while Jack Caruso made 34 saves in the loss.

 

MN Magicians 3 @ Kenai River 2 – The Magicians completed a weekend road sweep of the Brown Bears thanks to a 3-2 win on Saturday night. After the Brown Bears opened the scoring in the 1st period with a goal from Markuss Komuls, the Magicians gained back the momentum with a goal late in the 1st period from Joel Pavey and then added another goal early in the 2nd period from Carter Breitenfeldt to take a 2-1 lead. The Brown Bears tied the game at 2-2 in the 2nd period on a goal from Zach Krajnik, but Ricky Lyle Jr. scored later in the period for the Magicians, in what would prove to be the game-winner. Jack Robbel and Ethan Haider combined to make 42 saves in the win, while Gavin Enright made 29 saves in the loss.

 

Springfield 3 @ Fairbanks 2 (SO) – The Jr. Blues won their third straight game and moved into a tie for the 4th and final playoff spot in the Midwest Division thanks to a 3-2 shootout win, completing a weekend road sweep of the Ice Dogs. The Jr. Blues erased a 2-0 lead with two 2nd period goals from Max Brainin and Brandon Puricelli after Fairbanks had grabbed an early lead with goals from Jack Johnston and Jax Murray. In the shootout, goals from Puricelli and Ben Schmidling secured the extra point and sweep. Jack Williams made 22 saves in the win, while Mattias Sholl made 17 saves in the loss.

 

Maryland 1 @ Johnstown 2 (SO) – The Johnstown Tomahawks extended their winning streak to 10 straight games thanks to 2-1 shootout win at home over the Black Bears, completing a weekend sweep and increasing the Tomahawks lead in the division to 8 points. Both goals in regulation came in the 2nd period as Owen Arfstrom scored for Johnstown and Daylon Mannon answered for Maryland. In the shootout, the Tomahawks got goals from Cameron Hebert and Roman Kraemer to claim the extra point. Carter McPhail made 22 saves in the win, while David Tomeo made 24 saves in the loss.

 

Northeast 4 @ Jamestown 2 – Ryan Rowland scored twice to lead the Northeast Generals to a 4-2 win on Saturday in Jamestown, which split the series between the two teams. The Generals led 2-0 after two periods thanks to goals from Rowland and Connor Marshall. Jamestown stormed back in the 3rd period with back-to-back goals from Antonio Venuto and Lewis Crosby. However, goals late in the period from Alex Cohen and another from Rowland secured the win. David Fessenden made 27 saves in the win, while Ryan Keane made 24 saves in the loss.

 

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 6 @ New Jersey 8 – A night after the Titans were stymied for no goals on 53 shots, the Titans scored eight goals on 38 shots to pick up an 8-6 win and weekend split with the Knights. Michael Outzen and Thomas Lacombe each had a pair of goals and Cam Gendron, Ben Pirko, Kyle Jeffers, and Shane Haviland also scored for New Jersey. The Knights got two goals from Gabe Temple, and others from Adrian Danchenko, Jake Fuss, Sacha Guillemain, and Jacob Badal. Brandon Perrone made 38 saves in the win, while Zach Stejskal made 30 saves in the loss.

 

Amarillo 4 @ Corpus Christi 5 (SO) – Blake Bennett had a hat-trick and scored the shootout winner in front of 4,500 fans in Corpus Christi as the IceRays earned a weekend split with the Bulls thanks to a 5-4 win on Saturday. The Bulls had a 4-1 lead midway through the 3rd period before the epic IceRays comeback in the 3rd period. Cooper Fensterstock, Logan Jenuwine, Ryan Lautenbach, and Aaron Swanson scored the Bulls. Santeri Hartikainen had the lone goal for Corpus Christi before Bennett went off in the 3rd period with three straight goals and then the shootout winner. Sam Best made 38 saves in the win, while Justin Evenson made 38 saves in the loss.

 

Chippewa 0 @ Janesville 1 – Cole Brady stopped all 25 shots that came his way for his second shutout of the season as the Jets earned a weekend home split with the Steel thanks to a 1-0 win on Saturday night. The lone goal of the game came late in the 2nd period as Austin Koss scored his 3rd goal of the season with assists to Jack Vincent and Matt Hanewall. Josh Langford played well in the loss for the Steel, making 29 saves.

 

Topeka 4 @ Odessa 5 (OT) – Five different players scored for Odessa as they picked up their second win in as many games against the Pilots with a come-from-behind 5-4 win in overtime on Saturday. Odessa got goals in regulation from Josh Fricks and Connor Fedorek in the 1st period, and Matt Minerva and James Crossman in the 3rd period. Sebastian Frantz netted the overtime winner midway through the extra frame. Topeka got goals from Quinn Green, Max Finner, Michael Muschitiello and Hugh Quinn. Kade Phipps posted the win in goal for the Jacks, making 33 saves, while Emil Gransoe took the loss with 32 saves for the Pilots.
