Minot defenseman Fuss makes NCAA commitment

August 20, 2018
The Minot Minotauros of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are proud to announce that defenseman Sam Fuss has committed to play NCAA Division III hockey at the College of St. Scholastica.

Fuss, 21, will join several former Tauros teammates in Duluth, Minnesota, who play for the Saints.  Max Mettler will be in his junior year, Chase Springman and Nate Pionk will both be sophomores, and lMichael Talbot will be a freshman.

The 5’8/185 lbs. native of Edina, MN, pointed to the Tauro connection as a reason he chose the Saints. “I chose Scholastica because it seemed like a good fit for me and with the education and I know a lot of people on the team so it just felt like a good fit,” said Fuss. As for the education aspect of being a college athlete Fuss intends to study business management at Scholastica.

Fuss believes being a Tauro helped him along the way. “Coming out of high school I didn’t really know what to except but over the years it really helped me improve my overall game and how to play a role for sure.”

Fuss played his first junior season (2015-16) in Minot before moving on to the USHL’s Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.  While in Cedar Rapids Fuss injured his knee during the 2016-17 season and missed the second half of the season.  Once he was able to play again Fuss returned to Minot for the second half of his final year of junior eligibility.

Fuss recorded nine points in 32 regular season games this past season. Overall in his NAHL career, he played in 86 games and had 27 points.

Tauros Head Coach and General Manager Marty Murray believes Fuss was a big part of the team’s second half turn-around. “He’s a high character kid and was a nice veteran addition this late this year.  He helped stabilize our young D corps at an important time.  He played well, especially considering he was coming off of a serious injury.”

As for playing with so many former Tauros, Fuss admitted that it was part of Scholastica’s appeal. “Yes, I am very excited to play with so many former Tauros. It’s been a couple years since I’ve had the chance to be in the locker room with Chase Springman so I’m looking forward to that.”

Fuss had plenty of “thank-you’s” to pass on as for the support he received in Minot, “I’d like to say thank you to both of my billets for bringing me into their homes with open arms. Also, all the coaches of course for all of the hard work they put in each day to help us improve. All of the teammates I’ve had through the years who made it fun to come to the rink every day and battle it out. And lastly the fan base for the Tauros was the best in the NAHL so just a quick shoutout to them for making the Maysa rock and being supportive through the years.”
