New Jersey defenseman Antonucci makes NCAA commitment

June 11, 2018
The New Jersey Titans of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are proud to announce that defenseman Tyler Antounucci has committed to play NCAA Division III hockey at SUNY-Oswego for the 2018-19 season.

Antonucci is a two-year veteran with the Titans and served as team captain for the 2017-18 season. He recorded 10 goals and 28 assists, leading all Titans defenders with 38 points, as he played all 60 regular season games. He also was selected to and played in the 2018 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament for the East Division team.

Between his two years in New Jersey, Antonucci played 108 games and totaled 65 points (15 goals, 50 assists).

Oswego is a Division III program part of the SUNY Athletic Conference, and the Lakers are led by head coach Ed Gosek.

“It’s a huge relief, you work your whole life just to get to this point and play college hockey,” Antonucci said of his commitment. “When I went up to Oswego to visit, the rink was awesome. They average about 3,000 fans a game which is incredible, and it’s going to be a great atmosphere playing hockey up there.”

Titans head coach Craig Doremus, who came into the organization the same year Antonucci did, had nothing but praise for the 20-year-old defenseman.

“Tyler was the first player to sign a tender when your staff came to New Jersey. Since day one, he has epitomized what it means to be a Titan. On and off the ice he represents everything you want in a player, never mind your captain. Tyler has worked long and hard to improve his play and will be a huge asset to Oswego,” Doremus said. “I am so proud to say I had the opportunity to coach Tyler and can’t wait to watch him continue to grow and develop over the course of his collegiate career.”

In the 2016-17 campaign, Antonucci spent the first few months going in and out of the lineup. He not only played every game the following season, he was also named the NAHL East Division Defenseman of the Year and was named to the All-East Division team. He spoke about growing his game throughout his two years in Middletown.

“I came in as a slow-footed defenseman, and with Craig and Bobby’s help, they developed my game into the next level. You saw that with how I progressed in the first year and then to the second year becoming the captain, playing every day and playing a huge role on a very good junior hockey team,” Antonucci said.

The Titans would like to congratulate Tyler and his family as he advances his hockey career to the collegiate level.
