New Jersey forward Husted makes NCAA commitment

June 4, 2018
The New Jersey Titans of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are excited to announce that forward Andrew Husted has committed to play NCAA Division III hockey at Buffalo State for the 2018-19 season.

Husted is a 20-year-old forward from Niagara Falls, New York. In his second and final season with the Titans, he recorded 10 goals and 19 assists in 52 games. Between his two seasons in New Jersey, Husted notched 15 goals and 25 assists in 93 games. He spoke about his commitment and what it means to play college hockey near his hometown.

“It’s a big accomplishment that I am very proud of achieving, and obviously that is the goal of most young players of this day and age to play college hockey,” he said. “Getting to play for my home town college is also an incredible honor. It is a very high-level league with great competition in arguably the best division in the league. I still believe that there is much opportunity to be had and my journey is not over yet.”

Buffalo State is a Division III program in the SUNY Athletic Conference and is led by head coach Steve Murphy.

Titans head coach Craig Doremus spoke about Husted’s commitment and the progress he made with the team over the last two seasons.

“Andrew is one of the biggest success stories we’ve had in our first two years here. From a kid who battled his way onto the roster–he made the team through an open camp in Buffalo–came to the main camp and was arguably the best player on the ice, and that led to a great two-year career with the Titans,” he said. “His hard work, perseverance and effort, to me, is something that benefited our team greatly over the course of the last two seasons.”

On top of his on-ice accomplishments, Husted has been at the forefront of the Titans’ community outreach efforts, including the anti-bullying program, the Blessing Bag Brigade and more. His off-ice work earned him the East Division Community Service Award, becoming the second Titans player to receive it in as many years.

“He has laid the foundation, for me as a coach, with our expectations of forwards from here on out,” Doremus said. “I told Andrew in our exit meetings that it might be harder to replace him than some of our more gifted offensive players. The attributes he brings to the rink and to the team every day are extremely hard to find. I wish him nothing but the best moving forward and can’t thank him enough for what he did here on and off the ice for our program.”

Husted reflected on his two years with the program and how he grew as both a hockey player and a person under the Titans’ organization.

“I look back and miss every second and every day of being at that rink with my family,” said Husted. “Coming into my first season I had a lot to learn, Craig and Bobby believed in me and never gave up on me. They pushed me to the max and would help me when I struggled. I learned many things from them that have made me a better player. Aside from all things hockey, I truly believe that being part of the Titans has helped me find who I am as a person, influenced by only a genuinely kind, loving, and caring people who I consider my family.”

The Titans organization would like to congratulate Andrew and his family as he continues his hockey career at the Division III collegiate level and wish him the best of luck at Buffalo State.
