Friday Finals: Mudbugs, Jets, Minotauros win series openers

April 28, 2018

Jack Vincent scored twice to help the Janesville Jets pick up a 6-4 road win in Game 1 of the Midwest Division Finals in Fairbanks.

South Division Finals, Game 1: Lone Star 0 @ Shreveport 1 (Shreveport leads series, 1-0) – After 58 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Shreveport Mudbugs got a late goal to secure a 1-0 home win and shutout over the Lone Star Brahmas in Game 1 of the South Division Finals. Neither team was able to generate much in the way of an offensive attack in the opening 20 minutes of play. Shreveport outshot Lone Star 10-6 in the frame and the teams went to the locker rooms deadlocked in a scoreless tie. In the 2nd period, the Brahmas had their best chance of the game with a power play. While they did not score they had three very good looks from Kyle Hallbauer, Ture Linden and Jon Russell. Only some big saves by Jaxon Castor kept the Brahmas off the board. With 11:32 left on the clock a good keep at the Lone Star blueline gave Shreveport their best scoring chance of the night, but Mitchell Gibson hugged the far post to block the initial shot from Jordan Fader and three or four jabs at the puck from point blank range. With 1:28 left in regulation, Cole Quisenberry won an offensive zone faceoff back to Jack Clement at the blueline and he rifled a shot on goal that was redirected by Fader in front over Gibson’s blocker hand. Castor stopped all 30 shots for the shutout win, while Gibson made 36 saves in the loss. The loss was the Brahmas first regulation loss in 19 straight games. Boxscore

After a scores 1st period, the scoring got going early in the 2nd period as Minot forward Austin Koss netted his first goal of the playoffs just 1:37 into the frame. Later in the period, the Bruins got their lone goal from Travis Kothenbeutel. Minot took a 2-1 lead when Keenan Lund scored on transition with 9:18 left in the second period. Minot went up 3-1 when Grant Love scored with 13:09 left in the game and the Minotauros iced the game when Alex Adams connected on an empty-netter with 2:37 left in the game. Alex Schilling stopped 18 of the 21 shots he saw in net for the Bruins. Game 2 is Saturday night in Austin. Boxscore

Midwest Division Finals, Game 1: Janesville 6 @ Fairbanks 4 (Janesville leads series, 1-0) – TJ Polglaze and Sam Renlund each had four points and Jack Vincent scored twice to lead the Jets to a 6-4 win in Fairbanks in Game 1 of the Midwest Division Finals. Jax Murray opened the scoring to give the Ice Dogs a 1-0 lead 6:11 into the game, and Hunter Wendt extended it to 2-0 at the 10:56 mark. But the Jets rebounded when Sam Renlund scored a power-play goal on the team’s first man-advantage of the night 16:48 into the frame. Then Simon Sagissor netted the equalizer with one minute left in the period.
