Bobcats earn berth to Robertson Cup championship game

May 7, 2010

WENATCHEE, WASH. - Despite their 2-1 loss to the Wenatchee Wild on the fourth day of the Robertson Cup Championship Tournament on Friday, the Bismarck Bobcats have advanced to the championship game on Sunday.

The Bobcats clinched their berth to the title game by virtue of the following three scenarios: 1) a win over the Fairbanks Ice Dogs tomorrow; 2) advancing in the common goal-differential tie-breaker if they lose to the Ice Dogs and the Wenatchee Wild defeats the St. Louis Bandits tomorrow; 3) if they lose to the Ice Dogs and St. Louis defeats Wenatchee, they would win the head-to-head tie-breaker over St. Louis and the Traverse City North Stars (Bismarck beat both teams earlier this week).

“We couldn’t be happier to be headed to the finals,” said Bobcats forward Jason Fabian. “A lot of us have a bad taste in our mouths after last year’s showing at nationals (1-3 at the 2009 Robertson Cup) and this year’s team battled through a tough start and we’ve come a long way, but now we’re a win on Sunday away from the Cup.”

In the Wild’s win over Bismarck, forward Jeff Jubinville scored both Wenatchee goals, and netminder Brendan Jensen made 39 saves.

In the early game, Traverse City downed the Ice Dogs (2-1), 2-1.  Defenseman Travis White (game-winner) and forward Kyle Jean scored the North Stars goals, and netminder Drew Strandberg turned aside 22 shots.
