Pung leads Eagles to 2-1 win over Jr. Blues on Thursday

Springfield 1 @ Soo 2 – Brad Pung scored both goals and Chad Catt made 30 saves as the Soo Eagles picked up a 2-1 home win over the Springfield Jr. Blues in the lone NAHL game on Thursday night.
Thing got started quickly as the Eagles scored just :44 seconds into the 1st period as Pung took a slapshot from the blueline on a broken play that snuck through Springfield goalie Dryden McKay. Trevor Cope and Darren Brady picked up assists in the play. Soo outshot Springfield 15-8 in the period.
In the 2nd period, the Eagles would take a 2-0 lead at the 8:12 mark. Sandis Zolmanis started the rush up the ice and got the puck to Pung over the blueline. ¬¬¬¬¬Pung then used his defender as a screen and wired a shot over the shoulder of McKay for a 2-0 lead. Michael Caruso picked up the second assist.
Springfield would claw back just a minute later as some good cycling in the Soo zone by Grant Meyer and Brendan Jacques eventually got the puck in the high slot to Mike Crowley, who fired a shot through traffic that beat Catt. Springfield outshot the Eagles in the period 15-8. McKay ended up with 33 saves in the loss.
In the 3rd period, neither team managed a goal as the Eagles had a 12-8 shots advantage. The Soo picked up their 6th straight win and moved into sole possession of 2nd place in the North Division. With 10 games left to play in the regular season, the Jr. Blues remain in a tie for 5th place in the North, six points out of the 4th and final playoff spot.
