Alum Montoya makes NHL debut
April 2, 2009
Former Texas Tornado goaltender Al Montoya picked up a shutout in his first NHL appearance on Wednesday, making 23 saves for the Phoenix Coyotes in their 3-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche.
A first-round draft pick of the New York Rangers in 2004, Montoya, who played for the Tornado in 2000-01, went on to compete for the U.S. Under-18 Team before playing three years at the University of Michigan.
The 24-year-old from Glenview, Ill., began his professional career with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack in 2005-06.
