Weekend Wrap-up: K-Wings, Bulls win on Sunday

December 10, 2012

Soo 2 @ Kalamazoo 5 - Kalamazoo was able to score early in the game and did not give up the lead the rest of the way. Christian George scored twice, as did Davis DeKorte, leading the Jr. K-Wings to a 5-2 victory over the Soo Eagles. The Jr. K-Wings lit the lamp early when Christian George let go a quick wrist shot that found the back of the net only 2:18 into the game. Less than five minutes later, Taylor Burden added to the Kalamazoo lead with a power play goal that pushed the score to 2-0.  The Soo Eagles were brought back in the game when defenseman Kyle Froese stickhandled his way to the front of the net and slotted on home to cut the Kalamazoo lead to 2-1. The second period started just like the first when George scored his second of the game when he tipped home a shot from Brennan Sanford. Minutes later, Davis DeKorte scored his first goal of the season when he slotted home a rebound on another Kalamazoo power play. It did not take long for the Eagles to answer back yet again, this time Chris Waterstreet crashed the net hard, found a loose puck and buried it the top corner to bring the score to 4-2, Jr. K-Wings leading heading into the final period. In the third period DeKorte scored his second goal of the game and season when he snapped a wrister past Zach Nagelvoort to push the lead to 5-2. Boxscore

Wichita Falls 3 @ Amarillo 4 - Ryan Cole scored the game winning goal in the third period to lift the Bulls past the Wichita Falls Wildcats 4-3. The victory moved the Bulls into first place overall in the North American Hockey League, and first in the South Division. It was the Amarillo Bulls were fresh in the first 20 minutes. Despite playing their third game in three nights, the Bulls controlled much of the play and scored the game’s first goal. Omar Mullan’s quick shot beat Evan Cowley. It also started the parade of Teddy Bears and Stuffed Animals from the stands in support of Toys for Tots. The Bulls outshot the Wildcats 11-4 in the first stanza. The second period didn’t start well for the Bulls as they surrendered two goals in the first five minutes and fell behind 2-1 on goals from Wildcats forwards Colin Staub and Kyle Bauman. But two tallies 1:13 apart got Amarillo back in front 3-2. It started with a great shot from Brady Ferguson who notched his third of the year at the 8:47 mark. Matt Sieckhaus followed that up with a jam shot at the side of the net. The Wildcats tied the game up in the final minute of the second period on a scramble inside the Bulls zone as Ben Kucera jammed it home. Cole scored the game-winning goal three minutes into the 3rd period. Boxscore
