Saturday Scores: Goalies shine in sweeps

Kenai River 2 @ Springfield 0 – Kenai River goaltender Gustaf Johansson stopped all 41 shots as the Brown Bears picked up a weekend sweep of the Jr. Blues with a 2-0 shutout win on Saturday. Lucas Kohls scored the first and eventual game-winning goal in the 2nd period and Chris Nuth added a 3rd period goal for insurance in the win. Ryan Kellenberger was solid in goal for the Jr. Blues as he faced 44 shots, making 42 saves. Boxscore
Fresno 1 @ Bismarck 2 – The Bobcats completed a weekend sweep of the Monsters thanks to a 35-save performance by goaltender Bryan Nies, as he allowed just a goal for the second straight night. The Bobcats opened up a 1-0 lead in the 1st period thanks to a goal from Joseph Kaszupski. Rory Vesel made it 2-0 with a power play goal early in the 3rd period. Fresno clawed to within a goal as Mitchell Snyder lit the lamp, but that would be all the Monsters would get as they could not solve Nies for the majority of the weekend. Boxscore
Corpus Christi 2 @ Wichita Falls 3 (SO) – For the second straight night, the Wildcats would need a shootout to top the Corpus Christi IceRays as on Saturday it was Colin Staub and Eliot Grauer scored in the shootout to give the ‘Cats the weekend sweep. All the scoring in the game came in the 2nd period as Nick Farmer and Oliver Janzen scored for the Wildcats, while Perry D’Arrisso and Phil Pietroniro scored for the ‘Rays. Evan Cowley notched his second straight win, making 30 saves, while Dillon Kelley was good in the loss, making 36 saves. Boxscore
Wenatchee 5 @ Minot 2 – It was a dominating performance for the Wild, who outshot the Minotauros 40-17 on Saturday as they completed a weekend road sweep with a 5-2 win. Wenatchee opened up a 5-0 lead in the game, which included 1st period goals from Nathan Flynn and two from breakout star and NAHL leading scorer Jono Davis. Max McHugh scored in the 2nd period to make it 4-0 and Jacob Barber scored early in the 3rd period to make it 5-0. Connor Langfield and Stephen Sherman scored for Minot in the 3rd period. Boxscore
Port Huron 2 @ Jamestown 3 – Evan Ritt was the hero in the game for the Ironmen as they salvaged a weekend split with the visiting Fighting Falcons. Ritt scored twice including the game-winning goal early in the 3rd period and added an assist on the other goal as the Ironmen hung on to win. Daniel Cesarz had the other goal for Jamestown. Daniel Rehnstrom and Mark Evan Auk scored for Port Huron. Reid Mimmack moved his record to 3-0 with a 32-save performance, while Max Milosek took the loss making 29 saves. Boxscore
Kalamazoo 6 @ Soo 4 – The Jr. K-Wings erupted for three goals in the 3rd period on their way to a 6-4 win on Saturday and a weekend split with the Soo Eagles. Luc Boby was the big offensive star, recording a hat-trick, which included a goal in each of the three periods. The Eagles led 3-2 after one period with goals from Denver Pierce, Roman Pfennings and Alex Robert. Kalamazoo countered with the three goals from Boby and others from Sean Campbell, Davis Dekorte and Josh Dangel. Mike Sabatini had the other goal for Soo. Boxscore
Fairbanks 2 @ Janesville 1 (SO) – In an epic 24-man shootout, the Fairbanks Ice Dogs finally broke the deadlock with their 12th shooter, Brett Gervais, as they salvaged a weekend split of their weekend series in Janesville. After a scoreless 1st period, Matt Salituro’s goal in the 2nd period gave Janesville a 1-0 lead that they would hold onto until late in the 3rd period when Logan Wendling scored the equalizer for the Ice Dogs with just over a minute remaining. Brock Kautz made 39 saves in the loss, while Steve Perry made 27 saves in the win. Boxscore
