Fairbanks Goaltender McElroy makes NCAA DI Commitment

The Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are proud to announce that goaltender, Mason McElroy, has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for St. Cloud State University in the NCHC.

“I am incredibly grateful and excited to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at St. Cloud State University. Thank you to my family, friends, coaches, and teammates for supporting me every step of the way,” McElroy stated. “I would also like to thank the Ice Dogs organization for giving me the opportunity to wear the sweater for the past two seasons. The experience gave me lifelong friendships and valuable lessons that will stay with me in the future. Once a Dog, always a Dog. I am excited for what’s ahead with Husky Hockey!”

The 6-foot netminder from the State of Hockey, McElroy, will join the Huskies in his home state this upcoming fall. McElroy is a second-year Fairbanks veteran, playing 61 games in net for the Ice Dogs. The 20-year-old this past season recorded 15 wins while securing a 2.73 goals-against average and .894 save percentage. The Otsego, Minnesota native secured two shutouts during his 2025-26 campaign. His first one was early in the season with a 32-save performance against the Wisconsin Windigo. His second shutout was a 21-save night against the Chippewa Steel in December.

McElroy played 33 games between the pipes in his rookie season. He recorded a .906 save percentage while notching a 2.42 goals-against average for the Midwest Division team in his debut year.

Mason has been a tremendous part of our organization, and we are incredibly proud of all he has accomplished during his time with us. In his two years with the Dogs, Mason has endeared himself to teammates and fans through strong work ethic, leadership, and dedication to his craft. Best of all, Mason showed up to the rink every day with a smile on his face and a willingness to do whatever the team needed to succeed. His work with our goalie coach, Adam Carlson, certainly earned him this opportunity, and we could not be prouder. We thank him for his contributions to the Ice Dogs and are excited to see all that he will achieve at the next level.”
