Aberdeen Forward makes NCAA DI Commitment
The Aberdeen WIngs of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are proud to announce that forward Matthew Martin has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for University of Alaska-Anchorage.
Leading on the scoresheet for the Wings this season, Matthew Martin will head to Anchorage, Alaska, to skate with the Seawolves this upcoming fall. The 6-foot-6 forward is a second-year veteran of Aberdeen, skating a total of 97 games in the red and black. The Montreal, Quebec native has produced a team-leading 31 assists and 51 points, while ranking second with 20 tallies on the season. His offensive prowess on the ice has been recognized by the league on three separate occasions, being named as the Central Division’s Star of the Week on October 20, November 3, and November 24, 2025. He is the only player in the league to earn three divisional awards this year.
In his 38 games played this season, the 20-year-old has shown up on the scoresheet in 29 of them and has logged 16 multi-point games this year. In addition, he is tied first on his roster with a +22 rating for his 2025-26 campaign. His offensive prowess has come at crucial times this season because five of his tallies were the decider in contests.
In Martin’s debut season in the League of Opportunity, the 6-foot-6 lefty laced up in 59 games for the Wings. He scored five goals while making 10 assists for his team. For his NAHL career so far, the Canadian has scored 25 goals and produced 41 assists for 66 total points.
The second-year skater went into detail on what it means to secure a Division I commitment.
“I am very proud and honored to announce my commitment to further my education and to play Division I hockey at the University of Alaska-Anchorage! I would like to thank my friends, family, coaches, and teammates. Without them, I would not have gotten to this point. I cannot wait to represent this University!”
Head coach and general manager of the Wings, Scott Langer, explains the type of person Martin is on and off the ice.
“This is well earned by Matthew. He works for everything he achieves; it’s just who he is. Anchorage is getting a high-end player, but more so a high-end human being.”
Assistant coach of the Wings, David Mitchell, shares similar sentiments on Martin.
“I could not be happier and prouder of Matthew. Just goes to show that when you work as hard and as tirelessly as he does, on and off the ice, good things will happen. He is beyond deserving of this. Alaska-Anchorage is getting a tremendous hockey player, and an even better human.”
Martin is one of eight members of the Aberdeen Wings to make a Division I hockey college commitment.
