Maryland Alternate Captain Frenette makes NCAA DI Commitment
The Maryland Black Bears of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are proud to announce that forward Joshua Frenette has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for Long Island University.
The 6’4 lefty from Oshawa, Ontario, Canada has secured a commitment to skate with the Sharks. Frenette is a second-year veteran of the Black Bears, and this season he wears an “A” on his chest. The ‘06 forward has laced up for 23 games this season with Maryland. He has tallied eight goals while producing 18 assists. He currently spotlights a +16 rating for the year. The Canadian has been clutch for Maryland in important moments. He has secured a team-leading four game-winning goals. Frenette is also effective on the man advantage, with three of his goals and seven of his assists being produced on the power play.
Last season, the 19-year-old hit the ice in 62 games for the Black Bears. He scored 11 goals and notched 15 assists in his debut season in the NAHL. He has 52 career points in 85 games with Maryland over the two seasons.
Frenette shares his excitement about committing to the program and his gratitude for the people in his corner.
"I want to thank my family, coaches, teammates, advisors, and the amazing Black Bears fans for helping me reach this point in my career. I’m beyond grateful for the Maryland Black Bears organization and all they have done in pushing me to become a better player and person. I’m infinitely appreciative of the family and experiences I’ve gained while playing in Maryland. I am excited to start the next chapter of my hockey career in Long Island, but for now, my focus is on helping bring a Robertson Cup to Maryland."
Head coach of the Black Bears, Clint Mylymok, explains more about the impact Frenette brings to the ice and to the dressing room.
"Frenny has established himself as an elite power forward and has been a consistent performer for us all season long. His leadership and skills have improved here since he arrived last season. We are excited for Josh and his family, and we feel that Long Island University is getting an impact player. Congrats to Josh, as we know just how hard he has worked for this opportunity, but this is only the beginning for this kid!"
Frenette is one of six members of the Maryland Black Bears to make a Division I hockey college commitment.
