Saturday Scores: Genest, Mountain Kings Finish November Strong

Oli Genest and the Mountain Kings have won eight straight while Michael Manzi and the Rhinos swept the Brahmas in Lone Star

Amarillo 3 @ Colorado 2 (SO) - In a battle that saw a combined 94 shots on net, the Amarillo Wranglers edged the Colorado Grit 3-2 in a shootout. The game’s first action came with just 55 seconds remaining in the opening period, thanks to a Ben Rakowski rocket that hit the back of the net for Colorado. The Wranglers got on the board with a pair of goals in the second, both courtesy of Alexander Aleslov. Down by one, William Johnson seized the moment for the Grit and lit the lamp midway through the third to tie the game at two apiece. After an intense overtime that was held scoreless, Corson Maguire scored the decider to give Amarillo the win. Goaltender Charlie Zolin was outstanding in net, padding aside 47/49.

New Hampshire 1 @ Maine 0 - The New Hampshire Mountain Kings capitalized on a late first period goal, which would up being the game winner, as they held on to defeat the Maine Nordiques 1-0. Oli Genest’s 24th of the season would be the game’s only tally, as he netted one 16:52 in the first. Despite chances throughout for Maine, New Hampshire won this low scoring affair, backed by goaltender Sam Caufield and his 31-save shutout performance.

New Jersey 3 @ Northeast 1 - The New Jersey Titans found themselves up early and never looked back en route to a 3-1 win versus the Northeast Generals. The Titans netted two goals in the opening frame, courtesy of Ryan Novo and Jack Roberts. From there, Novo lit the lamp for his second of the evening to give New Jersey a commanding three goal advantage. Looking to minimize the damage, Jaden Sikura would put the Generals within two. However, the Titans would hang on to win this one, 3-1. Austin McNicholas stood tall in the crease, padding away 32/33 in the victory.

Rochester 3 @ Elmira 4 (OT) - The Elmira Aviators scored four unanswered to storm back and defeat the Rochester Jr. Americans 4-3 in overtime Friday night. The Jr. Americans looked to run away with this one early, with a trio of goals in the opening period from Nicholas Reif, Hugo Branthsson, and Gabriel Cull. Following a scoreless second, they were in the driver’s seat for a victory. The Aviators said not so fast, however, as they scored a trio of their own during the ladder half of the final period of regulation. Cooper Eberhardt, Curtiss Sturgeon, and Jet Otwell saw shots hit the back of the net to even the playing field. Heading into overtime, Clarence Beltz slid one past the netminder, as Elmira completed the comeback and emerged victorious in this exciting matchup.

Minnesota W 2 @ Springfield 1 (SO) - The Minnesota Wilderness held off the Springfield Jr. Blues with a 2-1 victory in the shootout Friday night. Zach homer opened the scoring, giving the Wilderness an early advantage in the first. From there, Niko Laus tied the game hallway through the middle frame for Springfield. Following a scoreless third and overtime period, Frantisek Netusil and Nate Murray sealed the deal with shootout goals to secure the win for Minnesota. Niklas Erickson was excellent in net for the Wilderness, stopping 26/27 shots. Despite the loss, Matt Schoephoerster played outstanding and padded away 31/32 for Springfield.

Austin 4 @ St. Cloud 1 - The Austin Bruins went up early and never looked back, as they wound up defeating the St. Cloud Norsemen 4-1 Friday night. Ludvig Mellgren and Alex Laurenza saw success early on, as they each lit the lamp to put Austin up by a pair in the opening period. The second period saw a goal from Evan Malkhassian to extend the Bruins lead. It wouldn’t be until early in the final period before St. Cloud got on the board, thanks to a shot from Mason LeBel. Despite an attempt to make a comeback, Nathan Williams sealed the deal late for the Bruins, as they hung on for the 4-1 victory. Goaltender Jack Solomon stood tall in net with his 25-save effort.

Johnstown 4 @ Maryland 1 - The Johnstown Tomahawks took advantage of the Maryland Black Bears with two powerplay goals en route to a 4-1 victory Friday night. Ryan Flaherty got the Tomahawks on the board first, which wound up being the first period’s lone goal. There, we saw Tate Pecknold light the lamp just 15 seconds into the second to extend Johnstown’s lead. Luke Janus would quickly put the Black Bears within one, but Nick Jarmain put the Tomahawks back up by a pair with a late goal. Looking to put the game out of reach, Tate Pecknold did just that with his second of the game, which sealed the 4-1 win for Johnstown. Nick Avakyan was excellent in net with his 26-save performance.

Chippewa 1 @ Wisconsin 3 - The Wisconsin Windigo propel late to take down the Chippewa Steel 3-1 Friday night. Fans wouldn’t see the lamp lit until just 45 seconds remaining in the second, where Josh Sardo’s goal put Wisconsin up front. Early in the third, Thomas Trunda got Chippewa on the board. However, the Windigo powered through, as Sardo netted his second of the game, before Ronnie Hill sealed the deal with an empty netter late for a Wisconsin victory. Wesley Jefferson-Swint II stood tall in the crease, stopping 20/21 in the win.

New Mexico 5 @ Oklahoma 4 (OT) - In the first, Andrew Earl scored for the Ice Wolves with assists from Noah Mertz and Nayan Pai. Jace Erickson added another goal for New Mexico with help from Ethan Hull and Sean Smith. Nate Farrell scored for the Warriors assisted by Trent Burlison and Kyle Jones. Farrell scored a goal assisted by Burlison and Domink Kiss. Louie Kamienski scored a goal for Oklahoma. In the second, Earl scored with help from Herman Asberg and Andrey Moskvitin. Burlison scored assisted by Kiss and Farrell. In the third, Bryce Johnson scored for the Ice Wolves with help from Asberg and Damon Bickler. This resulted in overtime. In overtime, Ethan Hull scored a goal for the Ice Wolves assisted by Pai and Sloan Farmer. Gavin Schann made 19 saves for the New Mexico Ice Wolves, while Kyle Jones made 22 saves for the Oklahoma Warriors.

North Iowa 5 @ Minnesota M 8 - In the first, Mitch Vandereay scores a goal early assisted by Trey Gnetz for the Mallards. Dakotah Bailey added another goal for the Mallards with help from Drew Bowe and Deke Davidson. Vince Kalscheur unassisted put the Bulls on the board. Liam Bard assisted by Parker Osborn tied up the game. In the second, Vanderway scored another goal assisted by Grant Kohnen and Hunter Hayes. Sangyeob Kim scored for North Iowa. In the third, Mark Denoyer scored with help from Bowe and Vanderway. Marek Thompson scored for Minnesota assisted by Hayes. Brady Borgestad added another goal with assists from Kohnen and Hayes. Kaschuer scored another goal with help from Cole Wirun. Vanderway scored an unassisted goal. Jameson O’Flynn scored an unassisted goal for the Mallards. Michael Malatino scored one more for the Bulls with help from Liam Bard. Jack Hirshorn made 34 saves for the North Iowa Bulls. Richard Rafaj made 40 saves for the Minnesota Mallards. 

Bismarck 1 @ Aberdeen 4 - The first remained scoreless. In the second, Bismarck’s Brendan Ruskowski got help from Calle Arvedson and Ian Engel. Aberdeen’s Leonid Bulgalov scored with assists from Gavin Reed and Sebastian Lillsund. In the third, Cole Saterdalen scored assisted by Matthew Martin-Gaudreault and Reed. Cade Moxham assisted by Reed and Jack McDonough added another goal to the lead. Gustas Zemaitis scored a goal with help from Brady Estabrook and Saterdalen. Tomas Anderson made 43 saves for the Bobcats. Willum Braun made 29 saves for the Wings.

Shreveport 3 @ Odessa 2 - In the first period, Odessa’s Charlie Smith scored a goal assisted by Nick Metelkin and Kowin Belsterling. Shreveport’s Seth Murch scored a goal with an assist from Ian Emery. In the second, Cole Hutchinson scored a goal for the Mudbugs assisted by Andrej Paricka. In the third, Caden Ghiossi scored a goal assisted by Belsterling and Jack L’Esperance: Gleb Akimov scored an unassisted goal for the Mudbugs. Aden Gariepy made 33 saves for the Mudbugs, while William Karphed made 42 saves for the Jackalopes. 

El Paso 3 @ Lone Star 2 - During the first, El Paso’s Beckett Hinchsliff scored a goal with help from Jacob Solano and Duke Gentzler. Ryder Many Grey Horses scored another goal with help from A.J. Reed and Ty Gordon. In the second, Hinchsliff scored another goal assisted by Thomas Shore and Gentzler. In the third, Charlie Masek scored a goal for the Brahmas with help from Anthony Cappello and Ryan Comishock. Elias Kumlin added another goal for Lone Star assisted by Kristi Pitkanen and August Classon. Michael Manzi made 26 saves for the Rhinos, while Ryan Cameron made 20 saves for the Brahmas.

Watertown 1 @ Minot 3 - During the first, Cam Markham scored a goal assisted by Zach Boren and Grant Gardner for the Shamrocks. John Small scored a goal assisted by Ian Spencer and Brandon Funk for the Minotauros. The second period remained scoreless. In the third, Jack O’Hanisain scored a goal for Minot with help from Billy Batten and Spencer. Small added another goal assisted by Murray Marvin-Cordes and Spencer. Phileas Lachat made 27 saves for the Watertown Shamrocks, while Lukas Swedin made 28 saves for the Minot Minotauros. 

Kenai River 4 @ Fairbanks 3 (SO) - The Brown Bears pulled off an epic comeback as they stunned the Fairbanks Ice Dogs 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday. The Brown Bears trailed 3-1 with just under three minutes remaining when Luke Lizak and Joseph Yoon scored to force overtime. Jack Clarke would net the game winning goal in the fourth round of the shootout to give the Brown Bears the extra point. Owen Zenone was the winner in net with 23 saves. Mason McElroy was given the loss as he ended the evening with 25 stops.
