The Minot Minotauros are proud to announce that defenseman Colby Woogk has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at Western Michigan. Woogk will become the first Tauro to suit up for the Broncos.  “I would like to thank my parents and sister as they helped guide me through this process. I would also like to thank my family, friends, billets and the entire Tauros organization for everything they have done for me,” said a clearly excited Woogk.

“It just feels amazing to have earned this opportunity. It’s been a stressful time going through this process but now that I picked Western all the stress has lifted off my shoulders knowing I picked the best opportunity for me,” said Woogk.  He explained that “the coaching staff” and Western Michigan playing “in the NCHC,” were key to his choice to commit there.

Tauros Head Coach/General Manager Cody Campbell said, “we are so excited for Colby and his family. Colby has matured and developed immensely on and off the ice during his three seasons in Minot and has earned the opportunity to play at a high profile program in Western Michigan.” Campbell continued, “he will make an impact on campus with his kind nature and on the ice as a defensemen that is committed to winning and can play in all situations.”

Woogk is in his third year as a Tauro having played 152 games. His 21 career goals is a franchise record for defenseman as are his 18 goals and 39 points this season. “Being a Tauro helped me go DI in many ways,” said Woogk. “First is just growing as a young man. I came to Minot as a boy and realized junior hockey is different than youth hockey and it turned me into a young man.” Woogk continued, “also being a Tauro has helped me learn how to live away from home.”  Finally, Woogk said, “I wouldn’t have been able to start my junior career and be in the spot I am now without this first class organization.”

Aside from a chance to play NCAA DI hockey Western Michigan’s campus being in Kalamazoo also appealed to Woogk.  He explained, “the city reminds me of Minot.”  In fact, Kalamazoo and Ward County are roughly the same size with less than a 5,000 person population difference.  Once on campus Woogk intends to study either business or sports management.

Woogk’s final message was for the entire city of Minot, “I would also like to add that I want to thank the whole Minot community for the support you guys have shown the Minot Minotauros organization. You guys make coming to Minot so special.”
