Wisconsin forward Schumacher makes NCAA DI Commitment

March 4, 2024

The Wisconsin Windigo of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that forward Will Schumacher has announced his commitment to play NCAA Division I hockey for Mercyhurst University in Atlantic Hockey.

Schumacher, 19, has been making appearances in the NAHL dating back to the 2020-21 season with the Minnesota Magicians. He followed up that 8-game stint with 28 appearances the following season, tallying 18 total points before the organization relocated to Eagle River. In his 2nd full season with the Windigo, Schumacher has upped his offensive production. In 42 games this year, he has netted 28 goals and 21 assists for 49 points. Those 28 goals place him 3rd across the entire league.

“I'm honored to have the opportunity to commit to play hockey and further my education at Mercyhurst University. I would like to thank all of the coaches and people who helped me along the way, especially my parents!” said Schumacher.

Schumacher was recently selected to participate in the 2024 Top Prospects Tournament, where he represented Team Midwest. In two games he recorded a goal and an assist. Will has made appearances in the USHL for the past two seasons with both the Waterloo Black Hawks and most recently Sioux Falls Stampede. Before playing junior hockey, Schumacher played high school hockey for Prior Lake High.

“Will has been a good player in this league for a long time, but his game has really matured this season,”  said Blake Hietala, head coach of the Wisconsin Windigo. He has added a level of compete and responsibility and it’s great to see him get rewarded with this opportunity. I’m really happy for Will and his family.”

He is the 13th player on the Windigo roster committed to playing NCAA Division I Hockey. He will be playing alongside six other current NAHLers at Mercyhurst University in the future.
