Wisconsin defenseman Groebner makes NCAA DI Commitment
The Wisconsin Windigo of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that defenseman Samuel Groebner has announced his commitment to play NCAA Division I hockey for Army-West Point in Atlantic Hockey.
Groebner, 20, is playing his 3rd season in the NAHL, all with the Windigo organization. His journey began with the Minnesota Magicians in the 2021-22 campaign where he played in 31 games. Last season the Apple Valley, Minnesota native stayed with the organization which moved to Eagle River and appeared in 14 more games, tallying 12 assists in the regular season and three assists in the Robertson Cup playoffs. This year he has already surpassed last year’s point totals, notching 14 assists with 13 games remaining in the regular season.
“West Point is getting a great person and player. Sam has worked hard to improve over the course of his career and has become a big piece of our success,” said Blake Hietala, head coach of the Wisconsin Windigo. “They are going to love his defensive game and his leadership, and he still may be just scratching the surface of his potential.”
Prior to playing junior hockey, Sam spent three seasons playing for Eastview High School and was named captain in his final year. Leadership is proven to be a quality of Groebner’s, wearing the “A” for the Windigo this season.
He is the 12th player on the Windigo roster committed to playing NCAA Division I Hockey. He will be playing alongside eleven other current NAHLers at Army-West Point in the near future.
