Chippewa gets by Wilderness in shootout
The Chippewa Steel edged the Minnesota Wilderness 3-2 in a shootout on Wednesday night as the Steel pulled off a come-from-behind victory with some late game heroics.
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Aidan Willis got the Steel on the board with his 10th goal of the season. Then, just before the break, the Wilderness tied things up as Peteris Purmalis netted his 13th goal of the year with just 10 seconds remaining in the middle frame.
Late in the third period, Purmalis notched his second goal of the night to give the Wilderness their first lead of the evening. With time winding down on the Steel, Zach Sondreal picked the best time to score his first goal of the season, a game tying one with just 1:40 remaining in regulation.
Overtime would not be able to decide a winner so the teams took it to the shootout where Anton Astashevich scored in the opening round for Chippewa before Peyton Platter delivered the dagger, sealing the win for the Chippewa Steel.
Ajay White was victorious in the blue paint as he turned aside 34 of 36 shots. Adam Moller was sensational as well, finishing with 30 stops in the loss for Minnesota.
