Aberdeen defenseman Russell makes NCAA DI commitment

December 30, 2020

The Aberdeen Wings of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that defensemen Trevor Russell has committed to play NCAA Division I Hockey at Michigan Tech in the WCHA.

The 6'2/187 lbs. native of Old Hickory, TN, is in his second year in the NAHL with the Wings.  Russell, 20, has played in 62 career NAHL games and has 20 assists with a +27 (+-).  Before joining the Wings Trevor played for the 14U, 15U, 16U & 18U TPH Thunder AAA programs.

That includes 12 points (all assists) in the Wings’ first 16 games this season, which currently leads the NAHL in point production for all defensemen.

"Trevor has grown as not only a player, but also as a person in his time as an Aberdeen Wing.  He is a fierce competitor that is always willing to put his team first.  This combined with a ton of passion to be the best he can, makes him a well-rounded addition to any team.  Michigan Tech is getting a first-class individual,” said Wings Head Coach/GM Scott Langer.

"First of all, I would like to thank my family for supporting me in my hockey journey.  My mom and dad have spent many hours traveling with me for practices and games.  They are my biggest supporters.  Also thank you to my past coaches that have worked with me to help me get to where I am today.  Thank you to my friends, teammates and billets that have supported me along the way.  Finally, I would like to thank the Aberdeen Wings organization and my coaches, Scott Langer, and Michael Hill, for helping me develop into a stronger player and help me reach my goals.  Looking forward to playing for the Robertson Cup.  I am very excited to become a part of the Michigan Tech Huskies family this fall,” said Russell.

Russell is the 10th player on the 2020-21 Wings roster who has earned an NCAA Division I commitment.

Michigan Tech is located in Houghton, MI.  They are members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA).  They have a 4-3-1 record this season.
