Chippewa forward Rice makes NCAA DI commitment
The Chippewa Steel of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that forward Sam Rice has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for Minnesota State University in the CCHA.
Rice, 19, just completed his first full season in the NAHL. The 5’9/163 lbs. native of Prior Lake, MN, led the Steel in scoring during the 2022-23 season with 58 points (28 goals, 30 assists) in 57 games played.
“I am honored and super excited to announce my commitment to play Division 1 hockey at Minnesota State University. I would like to thank my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for all their help and support along the way,” said Rice.
Rice was named the NAHL’s Forward of the Month for March 2023. During the month, he played in nine games during the month and recorded 16 points (6 goals, 10 assists) and was a +8. Rice had five multi-point games. He was also named the Midwest Division Star of the Week three times during the 2022-23 regular season
“We are so proud and excited for Sam. The consistency in his game night after night has made this such a special season. For a first-year junior player to do what he has done offensively is truly outstanding,” said Steel head coach Casey Mignone.
Rice made his debut with the Steel during the 2021-22 season, playing in 15 regular season games and recording 10 points.
Before the NAHL, he played three years of high school hockey in Minnesota for Prior Lake High.
