Maryland goalie Hakansson makes NCAA DI commitment

December 21, 2022

The Maryland Black Bears of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that goaltender William Hakansson has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for Lake Superior State University in the CCHA.

Hakansson, 19, is in his first season of playing in the NAHL and second season of junior hockey overall. The 6’1/180 lbs. native of Oskarshamn, Sweden, has put together a 14-3-3 record in 20 appearances with a 2.28 goals against average and a .910 save percentage.

“I am really grateful for this opportunity and very excited to continue my journey as a Laker. I would like to thank my family, coaches, teammates and everyone else who has helped me on this journey,” said Hakansson.

Hakansson has been named the East Division Star of the Week twice already this season from September 5-11 and again from November 7-13.

“William has been a big part of our early success this year, and will be a big part of our success moving forward. He came to Maryland to get some exposure to the NCAA and has parlayed that into a commitment to Lake Superior State. Congrats to “Hawk” and his family.  We are excited for his future as a student-athlete,” said Black Bears head coach Clint Mylymok.

Prior to playing in the NAHL, Hakansson played junior and youth hockey for the Vaxjo Lakers HC in Sweden.
