St. Cloud defenseman Sabo makes NCAA DI commitment

December 15, 2022

The St. Cloud Norsemen of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) are pleased to announce that defenseman Broten Sabo has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

Sabo, 20, is in his third season playing junior hockey in the NAHL. The 6’2/195 lbs. native of Rosemount, MN, has played in 18 games to date thus far during the 2022-23 season and recorded 12 points (4 goals, 8 assists).

Sabo was named the NAHL’s Central Division Star of the Week this past week as he put up five points in two wins.

Sabo twice has had an injury that kept him out of the lineup this season, once in September and once in October.  In those first five games he tallied just one lone point, an assist.  But since getting back into game action on October 28th he hasn’t missed a game and has been close to a point per game player (4-7-11 in 13 GP).   He also leads the team with three power play goals on the year.

“I’m proud to announce my commitment to play D1 hockey at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks! I want to thank my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for helping me get to this point,” said Sabo.

Sabo had a breakout year last season, when he recorded 27 points in 59 regular season games. He also added eight points in 11 Robertson Cup Playoff games as the Norsemen won the Central title and went all the way to the Robertson Cup Semi-Finals.

In 127 career NAHL regular season games, Sabo has recorded 45 points.

“I think after you miss some time it takes a little bit to get your feet back underneath you again and get back into that game shape. Broten been a lot more comfortable on the ice, a lot more confident, he’s playing well. It was nice to get that individual accolade but that comes with the team’s success,” said St. Cloud Norsemen Assistant Coach Brock Kautz.

Sabo agrees with Kautz that the first few games back from his injury may have been slowing him down.  “I would say my game has improved since getting back closer and closer to 100%.”
