Odessa goalie Orosz makes NCAA DI commitment

November 3, 2022

The Odessa Jackalopes, a proud member of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), are pleased to announce that goaltender Gergely Orosz has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for the University of Alaska-Anchorage (UAA). Orosz is the first Jackalopes player to commit for the 2022-23 season.

Orosz, 20, is in his final year of junior eligibility. The Gyor, Hungary native started his NAHL career last season with the Aberdeen Wings. The 6’3/185 lbs. left-handed goaltender played 18 games for the Wings and finished with an 8-7-1 record. Also, posting a 2.76 goals-against-average and a .906% save percentage, along with two shutouts.

So far this season, Orosz has played in seven games for Odessa and has a 4-2 record with a 2.30 goals against average. His current save percentage of .937 is tied for the fourth-best among NAHL goalies. Orosz recorded his most saves in a game on Oct. 29, 2022, against Lone Star after stopping 42 of 43 shots.

Before reaching the NAHL, he played 34 games for Stanstead College Varsity (CAHS) in 2019-20 and totaled a 22-12 record. Orosz has also spent some time playing for his home country in International-Jr (2017-22) play as well as WJC-20 D1A (2021-22).

The University of Alaska Anchorage is located in Anchorage, AK. They started their first season in 1979-80. The Seawolves are in an Independent Conference and are led by first-year Head Coach, Matt Shasby. There are currently six former NAHL players rostered this season for UAA. Throughout their program’s history, they have had nine players reach the NHL.

“This is a great opportunity for me to continue my hockey career and education at the University of Alaska Anchorage. My friends that play there had nothing but good things to say about the program and the coaching staff who have been very helpful and supportive in the whole process. I am still really focused on being successful this season not only as an individual but more importantly as a team. Making the playoffs is the ultimate goal. I would like to thank my coaches, teammates, family, and everyone else who has helped me on this journey so far,” said Orosz.

“We are excited for Greg on his commitment to UAA. He is going to a place that recruited him hard and we look forward to seeing where his career takes him,” said Jackalopes Head Coach Scott Deur.
