Saturday Scores: IceRays edge Bulls

Corpus Christi 2 @ Amarillo 1 – Goaltender Ben Myers made 30 saves as the IceRays snapped the Bulls eight game winning streak with a 2-1 win in Amarillo on Saturday.  The two teams traded goals in the 1st period as Brandon Berkley scored for the IceRays and Gage Christianson answered for Amarillo.  The eventual game-winning goal came midway through the 2nd period as Eric Purcell scored an unassisted goal.  Bulls goaltender Paul Berrafato made 20 saves in the loss. Wenatchee 2 @ Jamestown 3 (SO) – Goaltender Joe Ballmer made 34 saves then stopped all five Wenatchee shooters in the shootout as the Ironmen swept the Wild.  After a scores 1stperiod, Jamestown got on the board first in the 2nd period with a goal from Nico Sierra.  The Wild responded with two goals from Max McHugh and Evan Schmidbauer.  Dylan Zink’s 3rd period power play goal would send the game to OT then the shootout, where the Ironmen’s Luc Gerdes scored the only goal. Fresno 2 @ Johnstown 1 (SO) – The Monsters completed a weekend road sweep of the Tomahawks as goalie Macauley Haight made 39 saves the spoil the Tomahawks bid for a win in front of a sold out crowd in the Johnstown.  All the scoring in regulation was done in the 1st period as JB Baker lit the lamp for Johnstown and Mitchell Snyder scored for Fresno.  In the shootout, Haight stopped all four Johnstown shooters, while Newton Fuller and Snyder scored for the Monsters. Kalamazoo 2 @ Michigan 1 (OT) – Mike Fazio scored :43 seconds into overtime to lift the Jr. K-Wings to a 2-1 overtime win in Flint over the Warriors.  Kalamazoo opened the scoring late in the 1st period as Robbie Payne lit the lamp with helpers to Danny Hamburg and Christian George.  Michigan tied the game early in the 2nd period on a power play goal from AJ Marcinek with assists to Connor Lyons and Brad Pizzey.  Payne picked up an assist on the game-winner. Port Huron 2 @ Janesville 5 – The Jets earned a weekend split with the Fighting Falcons thanks to a 5-2 win at home on Saturday.  Todd Koritzinsky and Zach Diamantoni each scored twice in the win.  Janesville led 3-0 after two periods with goals from Jason Ford and one a piece from Diamantoni and Koritzinsky.  This two would score again in the 3rd period.  Port Huron got both their goals in the 3rd period from Tyler Spezia and David Parrottino. Bismarck 3 @ Austin 8 – CJ Smith had a goal and four assists for a five point night as the Bruins put up eight goals in an 8-3 win over Bismarck, completing a weekend sweep.  Austin opened up a 5-0 lead in the 1st period.  Christi Fischer, John Simonson, Riley Covard, Nate Mondry and Travix Maxwell all scored.  Fischer added a second goal in the 2nd period as did Josh Bretner and CJ Smith.  Filip Starzynski, Ryan Callahan and Jeremy O’Keefe ended up scoring the Bismarck goals. Odessa 1 @ Wichita Falls 5 – Five different players scored for the Wildcats and Evan Cowley made 21 saves as Wichita Falls completed a weekend home sweep of the Jackalopes with a 5-1 win.  Kyle Bauman and Jake Townsend opened the scoring for the Wildcats in the 1st period.  Matt Volonnino scored early in the 2nd period to close to gap to within 2-1.  Conor O’Neil, Nick Farmer and Tyler Ledford scored the final three goals for Wichita Falls. Coulee Region 3 @ Minot 0 – Tim Shaughnessy made 39 saves as the Chill shutout the Minotauros in Minot on Saturday by a 3-0 score.  The Minotauros scored a goal in each of the three periods.  Andy Faust scored in the 1st period, James McGing scored in the 2nd period on the power play and Aleksi Mustaniemi scored in the 3rd period on an empty-net goal.  Minot goalie Tyler Parks made 21 saves in the loss.  Minot outshot the Chill, 39-24. Topeka 4 @ Texas 2 – It now appears that Topeka is on the fast track to the #2 spot in the South and home ice in the first round thanks to another weekend road sweep of the Tornado in Texas.  Tyler Poulsen scored twice in the 3rd period to break a 2-2 deadlock to win the game for the RoadRunners.  Both Texas goals came on the power play as Jackson Leef and Scott Conway scored for the Tornado.  Topeka answered with two goals in the 2nd period from Kevin Patterson and Brandon Brossoit. Brookings 4 @ Aberdeen 5 (SO) – The Wings scored three goals in the 3rd period, including the game-tying goal with just :01 second remaining on the clock, and then won the game in a shootout over the Blizzard on Saturday.  Brookings led 4-1 heading into the 3rd period on goals from Nick DeCenzo, Eric Brenk, Justin Moody and Matt Youso.  Erik Baskin scored his second goal of the game to start the comeback and Jake Horton and Jordan Heller also scored.  Baskin also had the shootout winner. Soo 6 @ Springfield 5 – A wild 3rd period saw each team score three times as the Eagles scored the final two goals of the game with under three minutes left just :52 second apart from one another in a 6-5 win in Springfield.  Sean Murphy had a hat-trick and an assist for the Eagles, which included the game winner late in the 3rd period.  Jared VanWormer scored twice and Brandon Adams had the other goals for the Soo.  Brett Skibba scored twice and Jeff McFarland, Nate Chasteen and Mike Severson scored for the Jr. Blues.
