Topeka 5 @ Texas 3 – Kyle Sharkey recorded a hat-trick as the RoadRunners were bolstered by a three goal 3rd period in 5-3 win in Texas against the Tornado in the lone NAHL game on Thursday night.
The Tornado got off to the start they wanted as less than a minute into the game, Justin Greenberg gave Texas an early 1-0 lead. After that, it was all Topeka in the 1st period. Ross Luedtke tied the game at 1-1 seven minutes later. Then, Sharkey scored back to back goals three minutes apart to send Topeka to the lockerroom for the 1st intermission up 3-1.
Luedtke scored the lone 2nd period goal, his second of the game, to increase the lead to 4-1 for Topeka. Tyler Groat picked up his second assist of the game on the goal.
Texas mounted a 3rd period comeback, but it took half the period to get something going. Jackson Leef scored on an assist from Louie Rowe to make it 4-2 and newcomer Max Shuart scored his first Tornado goal in his first game with the team to make it 4-3. Despite repeated chances at the end of the game, the Tornado could not get the score tied thanks to the strong goaltender of Spencer Viele, who ended up with 29 saves.
Sharkey added an empty-net goal for the hat-trick with :29 seconds to go with an assist to Trace Stahle to put the game on ice. Hunter Leisner made 25 saves in the loss for the Tornado. With the win, Topeka climbed to within five points of Texas for 2nd place in the South Division.
