Tornado sweep through Odessa in lone NAHL game on Tuesday
Texas 8 @ Odessa 2 - In the final game of a four-game homestand, the Odessa Jackalopes fell to the Texas Tornado Tuesday at Ector County Coliseum by a final score of 8-2. Brandon Hawkins scored four goals in the win for Texas and now leads the NAHL in goals with 21 goals. With the loss, the Jackalopes’ third in a row and 11th in 12 games, Odessa remains alone in sixth place in the NAHL’s South Division standings at 4-13-2 overall this season. Texas, who is in 1st place in the South, increased their division lead to three points over Topeka.
Following a 9-1 defeat on Monday at the hands of the Tornado, the Jackalopes surrendered an early lead on Tuesday as well, when CJ Reuschlein netted the first of four opening period scores for the Tornado less than two minutes into the game. After Ryan Doucet’s fifth goal of the year briefly tied the game minutes later, the NAHL’s leading goal scorer Brandon Hawkins notched two unanswered tallies at 6:52 and 15:51 of the first and Andrew Mayer topped off the Texas scoring in the opening period with a final-minute score to make it 4-1.
Two more Tornado goals in the second, from Jordan Paine and a hat-trick tally from Hawkins made it 6-1 Tornado, then in the third, Jackson Leef scored at 4:05 and Hawkins put the finishing touches on a four-goal night at 7:39 to extend the Texas lead to 8-1. The final marker of the game went Odessa’s way as Pat Thompson rocketed his third goal past Texas netminder Jerry Kaukinen.
However, Kaukinen was strong in goal making 26 saves. Blake Wojtala made six saves before being pulled after the first period. Replacement Andrew Pikul made 25 saves, but also allowed four goals. Texas defenseman Anthony Mousseau registered three assists in the win for the Tornado.
