Amarillo's Lubin makes NCAA Division I commitment

April 4, 2012

An 11th member of the 2011-2012 Amarillo Bulls roster has his NCAA College Commitment. The Bulls, proud members of the North American Hockey League, announced today that defenseman Brandon Lubin has committed to American International College for the 2012 season.

American International College is located in Springfield, Massachusetts and plays in the Atlantic Hockey Division.  Lubin, a native of Commerce Township Michigan, is in his second season with the Bulls, and has notched five goals and added 13 assists for 18 points in 58 games. He was plus 39 and had 104 shots on goal. He also recently participated in the NAHL Top Prospects Tournament in February where he helped lead the South team to a 2-1-0 record.

“I went for a visit a couple of weeks ago and toured the campus, the city of Springfield and took a liking to it,” said Lubin. “I thought the coaching staff and players were great, and I’m looking forward to being part of the team this fall.”

Lubin was one of four players, now all with NCAA College Commitments, who were part of the original Albert Lea roster three seasons ago. He was also chosen as a co-recipient of the Coach’s Award along with forward Greg Gibson.  Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams said is one of those types of players who lives and breathes the game of hockey on and off the ice.

“He’s at the gym all of the time and on the ice for extra ice time in the afternoon shooting pucks or doing whatever it takes to get better,” Williams said. “He’s been a delight to coach and a terrific guy. I know coach (Gary) Wright is going to enjoy having him.

“I expect Brandon to not just be a typical freshman, but to go in there and take a spot on the roster. I hope he can go there with the leadership and characteristics he has learned here, and fight for a job.”
Williams says Brandon has become a solid player for the team on defense.  “He plays up top on one of our power play units with John Rey and has a heavy shot, a good one-timer,” said Williams. “He has really developed into his own, and one of the top five guys in plus minus this year.”

Lubin said he credits the Bulls coaching staff with helping him to get to the next level. “They have pushed me to better myself both on and off the ice,” said Lubin. “If I have questions regarding certain things they have been ready to help me. I think that in the last season and a half that as a player I have improved a lot from them.”

Brandon Lubin becomes the 11th member of this year’s Amarillo Bulls to commit to play NCAA Hockey. He joins TJ Sarcona (Niagara University), Brooks Behling (Providence), Matt Johnson (Lake Superior State University), Luke Jenkins (Army), John Gustafsson (Merrimack College), Joe Kozlak (Army), Greg Gibson (Robert Morris University), Karl Beckman (Holy Cross University), Michael Erickson (Williams College), and Ryan Taylor (Western New England University).
